It was a cold overcast blustery morning for the Girls Soccer World Cup Championship game.   Emmy started the morning with a high protein breakfast and was “pumped” to get on the field.

Eleri on the other hand would have prefered to have stayed home.  Not only did she not leave Brenda’s arms for the entire game but she hid for the first half of the game.

Emmy took over goal tending late in the first half and for the entire second.  She only gave up one goal and made at least 5 stops – aggressively going after the ball and diving inspite of feet all around.

Her team,  Poland, won a hard fought game 6-5 against England.  Each of the girls received their Championship medal at a ceremony after the game.

I have heard that the counter to Las Vegas wedding is a “Mexican divorce”.  I don’t know if a similar thing applies to a Shanghai wedding.

We went to our first Chinese wedding last night.  My executive admin was getting married for the first time.  I say that because in north China an evening wedding would signify a second marriage, but in Shanghai, evening affairs are preferred.

B N G 1.jpg

The invitation had a wedding time of 5:18 PM – the 8 is for luck.  We arrived on time to a radiant bride and beaming groom.  The guests continued to arrive for about an hour as the couple greeted them, take a picture with each and the guests pay their “entrance fee” to the banquet – in other word, handing over of the hongbao (红包)(red pocket) full of cash as a gift.

We were seated at a prime table with the other laowai (老外) (foreigners) from my office.  The table was set with drinks and cigarettes for the guests.   The wine label read: “Red Wine for Joyful Occasions” – I thought red wine made ALL occasions joyful!.  I love the Double Happiness smokes – guess lung cancer is not a concern.

One of the experiences of a Chinese wedding banquet is the food.   As we waited for all the guests to arrive, a series of cold dishes were put on the table.  Included was shredded jelly fish (which Brenda thought were noodles – taking a big bite), duck tongue, and dried salted fish.

As a group of laowai, we did not know the etiquette so we started eating the cold dishes until we noticed no one else was. One of my Chinese colleagues then explained drinking was encouraged, but we had to wait to eat.

After the couple made their grand entrance, swapped vows on stage (of course everything was in Chinese – we just followed the crowd when it came to clapping), did a quick cake cut amidst spewing bubbles and poured pink champagne down the stack of glasses, it was time to eat.

Talk about a culinary adventure.  From the aforementioned cold dishes, we went on a journey that included the following (I am glad the menu has pictures!):

Turtle Sticky Rice                            Deep Fried Snake

Not pictured but honorable mentions: Steamed Fish, Prawns, Pork and Dumplings

Brenda was on the adventurous side of the table.  She ate snake (tastes like chicken, just lots of small bones), Pigeon (taste like chicken, only smaller and gamier), turtle rice (tastes like rice with chicken chunks and turtle shell bits to spit out) but duck tongue is where she drew the line.

After a few more rounds of food, two large pieces of wedding cake were placed on the table.  Brenda scanned the table of ten and wondered what the rest of them were going to have for dessert.  Try eating wedding cake with chop sticks – very amusing.

The bride ran off again and put on her traditional red dress.  The couple then reappeared on stage, where gifts with the parents were exchanged and the couple conducted a “lucky draw” for the guests.  The lucky draw was done by cycling through the entrance picture of all the guests on a big screen and the bride saying “stop”.  The “winner” had to come up on stage and give a performance to receive their prize.  None of us knew what they received as a lucky draw prize.  In reality, we were the lucky ones not getting selected to sing a Chinese song in front of total strangers.

The couple then made rounds to all the tables for a table by table toast.  This signified the end.  Many tables performed one by one toasts with the couple intent on getting them drunk.  As laowai, we were not knowledgeable about the practice, so we let the couple off with a single toast for the whole table.

We ended the evening in fine shape.  Well fed, enough cocktails and very full of the new experience.  I find the more I am in China, the more Chinese and Western culture are the same, just in a different priority order.

Oh, to have a lazy Sunday!  Sleeping in late – not!  Those little organic alarm clocks just cannot be turned off.  After having a blissful sleep interrupted by two little ones, we did enjoy cuddle time watching Charlie Brown Christmas in bed.  After a late breakfast, nowhere to go, nothing to do on a beautiful cold sunny day sure is nice.

Girls maze.jpg

The girls decided to play “dogs” and build the rat maze doghouse from the “secrit club house” across the living room.  They had a blast hiding, crawling in the sprawling maze!

C-A-L Who you rooting for?

After a frustrating football season of having to listen to games over the internet on Sunday mornings (and missing the early games – no, I was not going to get up at 3AM to listen), I will be in the USA and able to watch Cal in the Holiday Bowl game Dec 28th versus Texas A&M.  Now I just need to find someone with ESPN.

Cal finished the season on a high note,  survived a bitter wind and stubborn Stanford for a 26-17 victory in the 109th Big Game on Saturday. The victory, coupled with USC’s loss to UCLA gives the Golden Bears a share of the Pac-10 Conference championship for the first time since 1975.  Cal finished the year ranked at No. 18 in the BCS standings.

Today was the semi-finals in the girls soccer league.  It was a lovely sunny day, but very cold morning (38F) so Brenda and Eleri stayed at home. Prior to the game Emmy was giving her prediction that they would end up on top!

Emmy’s team played quite well, dominating the other team 8-1 and will be playing in the finals next week!  Go team!

We spent the afternoon trying to get a family photo for the Christmas card.  It was one of the first days with no rain, but it was quite cold (40F).  We scrambled to get a photo that was recognizably Shanghai.  This one of the girls is my favorite.

We went to the Christmas Bizarre at Emmy’s school.  Many lovely objects d’art for sale (and yes, Brenda did buy!!).  There was the prerequisite Santa.

While Emmy enjoyed sitting on Santa’s lap, Eleri wanted nothing to do with him – to the point where she climbed on my shoulders, hid her face and said “No daddy, go out, go out!”  She did not want to even be in the same room.

Eleri and one of her little friends from her Motesorri class went to the Aquarium today.  Due to a power station test, there was no class.  The kids had a great time viewing the fish and a much better time riding on the … whatever it is!

We are very fortunate to have made friends with Jim’s work colleagues. Jim works with Brad Peacock and Mala Riley. Brad and his wife, Judith, have been in Shanghai for two years. Mala and Ray arrived this summer about the same time as we did. Brad and Judith are the couple that always opens their home to a party. They invited our family and Mala’s family to Thanksgiving. This was the first time our family has had a real Thanksgiving meal since we moved to Asia in 2003. It was nice to share the celebration with new friends. The turkey was ordered from a hotel restaurant due to small ovens in China. All three of the families live in the same building, which is amazing that we all found open apartments in same building.

Finally, the last big upper came out.  Dad had to pull it with minor drama.  The Tooth Fairy made a 6th visit.  Emmy has a Christmas wish for six front teeth.

Dear Emersyn,

My dear Emersyn, I was so happy to visit you tonight, again. I was just here last week to get that other tooth. This is my sixth visit to you. I always enjoy reading all your letters. I enjoyed the smiling tooth, again. Wow, you had many questions tonight. I had to print them on another paper.

I have enclosed a ten-rmb note for you for losing your sixth tooth. I look forward to my next visit and letter. I think it will be some time before I visit you again as I have no tingle in my wings.

Love the Tooth Fairy
November 22, 2006

The Tooth Fairy answered all of her questions.

My Dear Emersyn,

You have so many questions tonight. Let me try to get through them all.

1. Do you have a queen? Yes, she is so lovely.

2. Are you building the palace or the chair with my tooth? These front teeth are perfect for the top of the chair. These teeth are big and flat. We will use your tooth for one of the royal chairs in the palace. Your teeth are very strong with no cavities, therefore, all your teeth area used on the palace. Teeth with cavities are used for gates and fences.

3. What kinds of fairies are there? There are all kinds of fairies. There are tooth fairies, flower fairies, tree fairies and more.

4. Will you keep my tooth safe? Oh, of course.

5. Do you have horses? Oh, no. Horses are too big for the fairies. We have our wings to fly.
6. What is it like to be a fairy? It is fun because I get to visit such kind children as you each night.

7. Are you the only tooth fairy or are there other fairies? There are many tooth fairies. There are many children in the world about your age that are losing teeth everyday. This makes us happy as we put all the teeth to go use.

8. Can fairies really fly? Oh, yes. We fly all around the world. I have visited you in Hong Kong and now China. I have children in Germany, America, Poland and all places in the world.

9. Do you have a magic wand? Yes. I use it to help me fly around the world faster. I little magic dust goes a long ways.

10. Have you ever wished to be a mermaid fairy that can go under water and on top? Hum, no I have not thought about it as I enjoy seeing the children sleeping so peaceful each night…like little angels.

11. Do you have a king in fairyland? No, only a queen

12. Can you give me a poster of all the fairies in fairyland including the King and Queen, if you have one? There are many fairies in fairyland. I could not possible put them all on paper.

Write back soon…I always write to you on the night I take your tooth. After all these questions, I must get to the next child.
