The World Expo ends on October 31. I think it is fun to see – a bit too many people, but you have to go with the right attitude or it is no fun. We took the 10:30 ferry. We walked the two blocks to the ferry, purchased tickets and got on the boat with out waiting in a single line!

We thought we would stop on the Corporate Pudong side first. I wanted to see the Coca-cola building as it was well done in Beijing at the Olympics. As were we walking to the Coke building, we notice the fast line for elders over 75. We watched as people used this fast line to see if we could slide the Grandparents through it, but everyone was showing an id. We were hoping we could slide Grandpa in as 75. Grandpa is 69 which is close enough when it comes to a long line.

Coca-cola – When we arrived at the Coca-cola line, it was 4.5 hours long. We passed, but we took photos outside with the various coke bottles and caps.

After a coke and fun photos, we walked to the river to catch a boat across to the Puxi side. All the World Pavilions are on the Puxi side. We needed to find food as everyone was hungry! We found a fast food place near the African Pavilion called Kuna Matata…looks good!

Kuna Matata – We enjoyed some fast food ostrich wraps and chicken wings. It was perfect to fill the tummies fast.

African Pavilion – With full tummies, we ventured into the African Pavilion. It was a large building hosting many smaller countries of Africa. There were no lines as the place is big and you wonder into the various small set-ups.

The real fun of the African pavilion was the shopping. We spent over an hour shopping. Grandpa holding my carved out pumpkin-like fruit (forgot the name). Now, I had the fun of carrying it for the rest of our Expo day.

The time and day gets away from you when you are at the expo. It was already 5pm. We needed to venture out and see more!

Egypt – We decided we need to see the Egypt Pavilion since we are going there for Chinese New Year. We waited about 40 minutes to get into Egypt.

Tunisia – Tunisia was next to Egypt with a short line, therefore, we ventured into see it. Jim noticed they were doing the henna tattoos for 30rmb. Emmy wanted to go back to Qatar to get an henna. The only problem was that Qatar was on the far side of the Expo. We talked the girls into doing it here with a promise we would go to Qatar on our Friday kid Expo day planned in a couple of weeks.

I also bought the girls some perfume in these beautiful, delicate bottles in Tunisia for 150rmb ($22) each. Both of the bottles were broken when we got home. The perfume was still in the bottles, but the tops had broken.

Russia – we walked over to see Russia as it is pretty at night. The lines were long, of course. We decided to see if we could get in by saying Grandpa is 75, but has no id. They let us in – we should have tried this sooner!! Russia was a large pavilion with two floors. It felt as if you were in Alice in Wonderland with large plants all about. The lighting in the pavilion was blue, therefore, most of the photos did not come out.

The next stop was dinner, it was after 7pm already. Our tummies were hungry. We found a nice Italian place to eat. The pizzas and pastas were very good.

United Kingdom – This pavilion was on the top of my list to see if we could use the “elder fast line” with Grandpa. The guides/guards checking id’s were tough to pass. First, we almost didn’t get in since there was no id. Jim pushed and he gave in. Then, only two people could go in with the elder person, plus the children. Really, everyone in our group could go in but one person. We should have said Grandma was 75, also. I think she will be aging for the next pavilion. I said I would stay as I have been to the Expo more than anyone. The family went in to see this unique pavilion. Grandpa came back out in about 10 minutes to see if he could get me in, also. We had to wait for the tough line bouncer to leave as we almost couldn’t even get Grandpa back in. We went in to catch up with the family.

This is my favorite pavilion at the Expo. It has such a different look from the outside and unique on the inside. The pavilion looks like a box with thousands of spines that hover without visible support. It is a cube formed by more than 60, 000 slim and transparent acrylic rods containing seeds of different plants that were collected in a bio-diversity project.

The inside called the “Seed Cathedral” was small, but interesting. You enter the “Seed Cathedral” to admire the seeds in the spines.

During the daytime, each of these 7.5-meter-long rods will act like fibre optic filaments, drawing on daylight to illuminate the interior. At night, light sources embedded in each rod will allow the whole structure to glow.

The Lupu Bridge (卢浦大桥) is the world’s second longest arch bridge and steel arch bridge, after Chaotianmen Bridge in Chongqing, China. The 2.5 billion yuan (US$302 million), 3, 900-meter (12, 795 ft) bridge was opened on June 28, 2003. Its main span is 550 meters (1, 804 ft) over the Huangpu River.

The name of the bridge, Lupu, is an abbreviation of the two districts of Shanghai which it links – Luwan District on the north bank, and Pudong New District on the south bank. This follows the naming convention of the three earlier bridges on the Huangpu River – Nanpu (Nanshi-Pudong), Yangpu (Yangpu-Pudong), and Xupu (Xuhui-Pudong).

Lupu Bridge at night

Spain – Spain was another pavilion I wanted to see while we had our “old people” pass. This is another pavilion with waits up to 4 hours. Spain is another interesting pavilion from the outside. It is constructed of 8, 524 wicker panels of traditional materials and a handcraft technique used both in China and in Spain. The space spanning 7, 000 square meters was designed to be a hand-weaved wicker basket structure supported by the steel framework inside.

The inside had three exhibited halls. The first hall had scenes of water and fire enclosed around you on the wall and ceiling. At the end, a lady performs a traditional dance. It was interesting, but hard to enjoy with all the people around. The second hall had scenes of urban landscapes of Spain from the perspectives of people from different ages to the urban cities. The third hall had giant baby, 6.5 meters tall. It was a bit odd looking as it blinks and welcomes people.

Shanghai World Expo: SPAIN PAVILION

Poland – We had time for one more pavilion. The girls were getting tired and Grandpa’s bad knees were tired. Everyone had tired feet. I had tired feet so I can just imagine how tired the Grandparents feet were by now. We decided to do Poland since Grandma has a strong Polish background.

The Inside of the Pavilion was made of white lattice walls and ceiling. Again, hard to get a good photo with the lighting.

Sweden – It was 10pm when we left the Poland Pavilion. As we were walking out, I saw the Sweden horse. For all those with kids, it is the Hanna Andersson clothing company horse logo. I had to have a photo of the girls on the horse. No one (but me) wanted to go in the pavilion as everyone was ready to go home.

We walked out one of the many gates to find a taxi. The taxi queue was long, but moving fast and orderly (a surprise in China). Elle was asleep before we got home. Another fun, long day at the World Expo.

For Jim’s birthday, we had reservations at Lost Heaven on the Bund. This new Lost Heaven opened about a year old. The original Lost Heaven restaurant is located in the French Concessions. It is Yunnan food with wonderful spices in all the dishes.

Since we live close to the river, we walk two blocks to catch the ferry to the other side. It is actually faster than driving. The ferry cost 2rmb ($.30). For the 2rmb, you also get to enjoy the views of the Bund on the Puxi side and the skyline on the Pudong side.

The Pudong Skyline

After eating all kinds of different dishes, we went for a walk on the Bund. The Bund was under construction for about two years – it was “beautified” for the Expo. Now, it has a beautiful promenade to walk and enjoy the sites of Shanghai.

The Big 46 for Daddy this year! Since Jim’s birthday was on a Thursday, I made dinner at home with the family chocolate cake. We have birthday dinner plans at Lost Heaven on the Bund with Grandma & Grandpa for Friday.

It was a sugar kind of day. Along with the cake, I made four dozen cookies for the bake sale at school (where is that Mom of the month award). The adults enjoyed sampling cookie dough and frosting all day.

A new-used bike for Eleri. We sold her old bike as she had outgrown it. Eleri was beyond thrilled to get Emersyn’s old bike. Emersyn has outgrown her bike, also. One afternoon, Grandma and I took Eleri out for ride around the complex. Eleri is fast on this bike. It is a bit big for her, but perfect for growing!

It reminded me it was this same time of the year four years ago when we bought the bikes. We purchased them on Jim’s birthday, October 7, at the Friendly Bike Shop in Hong Kong. At that time, it was hard to find foot-pedal brake bikes in Shanghai. Emersyn was 6 when she got the bike, also.

After four years, the bike looks the same with a few less streamers. The girls have changed!

On our drive home, Mr. Nie wanted us to stop to see Wuzhen. We were thinking we might just pass based on the number of people in Hongzhou, but decided we would brave the crowds with an open mind. We took Terri to Wuzhen the first time she visit Shanghai in 2007. It is a very beautiful River Town. See April 2007

Elle wanted to take the boat ride first. We had thought about taking the boat later, but why not now. Well, she was right because later the line was very long to take the boat down the river.

Families live on this river, therefore, there is always a laundry photo to be found in China.

This was a bit different scene than we we came with Aunt Terri.

Same girls – same spot!

Hangzhou (杭州) is a is a major city located in the Yangtze River Delta region of of Zhejiang (浙江) province. Hangzhou is renowned for its historic relics and natural beauty. It is often known as one of the most beautiful cities in China. One of Hangzhou’s most popular sights is West Lake. The lake itself covers an area of 6 km2/2.3 square mile (600 hectares).

We arrived to major traffic in Hangzhou. Mr. Nie had to drive in circles trying to get us to our hotel down by the West Lake. It was a busy weekend because of the Holiday. For the past four years, we have avoided travel in China during a Chinese Holiday. This was reinforcing the reason we did this! We got checked into our hotel, which was very nice (and too expensive). We crossed the street to see the lake with all the people.

We took a boat ride to the island.

Once on the island, we followed the paths around the park. The park had pretty flowers with trees and large lili pads in the water.

I am sure the view would have been more enjoyable with a few less people!

We did buy the girls some bubble guns which they enjoyed while we finished our tour of the island.

On the boat ride home, we ran for a back seat outside to enjoy the view.

We decided we needed a break from the crowds. We took the girls to the pool at the hotel for a little down time.

After the pool fun, we went to dinner near the hotel since it was raining. We enjoyed our time here, but I can’t say we will be back! I can’t say I thought it was one of the most beautiful cities in China – maybe the people blocked the view!

The first week of October marks the Chinese National Holiday. The girls began their holiday on the afternoon of Thursday, September 30. They would be off from school until the following Wednesday – just enough time for a small get-away with Grandma & Grandpa. My parents arrived on Tuesday for a 3-week visit of Shanghai. The weather was perfect to visit Moganshan, an area known for the bamboo forests.

The drive is about 3 hours from Shanghai. We arrived around 4pm to find the Naked Retreat Hotel. The Naked Retreat has traditional farmhouses which have been restored into rustic bungalows.

Before taking us to our bungalow, we went on a “decompression hike” of 15 minutes. It gave us a view of the beautiful area. We all thought the trees came out the pages of a Dr. Suess storybook.

Then, we drove to the end of the road. I didn’t realize we would have to climb a steep hill to get to our bungalow. The girls ran up it, but the Grandparents were a bit slow going up. Good thing we didn’t have to go back down until tomorrow.

The bungalow was a simply, cozy converted farmhouse. At checkout, we were told the story of our bungalow. A couple in their 90’s lived in this house prior to The Naked Retreat purchasing it. My father was most amazed that 90-year old people walked up and down the steep stair path. He was beginning to realize that Chinese people live longer and are healthier than Americans.

The gentleman carrying all of our luggage at one time was 65 years old. He put the luggage on a pole and climb the steep steps to the top.

We had delicious dinner prepared for us in our bungalow. The ayi made a rosemary chicken with all the trimmings.

In the morning, the girls were busy catching butterflies. Jim and I left for a short hike with plans to meet everyone at the lake. I had arranged for the girls to go fishing with Grandpa & Grandma.

It was a beautiful day for a hike. The bamboo forest has dirt and stone paths to follow. You can spend the whole day hiking all over the hillside. We planned to be gone a couple of hours before meeting the family.

The workers cut and carrying the bamboo down the steep paths. The bamboo sticks are piled at the bottom near the road.

A farmhouse of a bamboo worker.

As we hiked the paths, we came upon two old churches beautifully built in the forrest.

A tea field among the Bamboo trees. Green tea is a speciality of this area.

This fences is an brilliant example of using natural resources. The fence and gate are made of twigs. It creates a unique look.

We finished our hike by walking down to the lake to find the family. Love the sign at the lake.

The girls were not having too much fun fishing. The hotel gave them fishing poles that were a pole with a sting on the end. No casting of the rod…no fun. The best part of fishing is casting the line. Elle was stilling trying to get the string in the water which was impossible with her height.

Emmy was “fishing” on my iphone. She said she can at least cast her line in the game!

The fishing gang watching the water and waiting. We really didn’t plan to catch anything, but the girls were disappointed in the rods.

After our fishing “fun”, we walked back to our bungalow for showers and dinner. Tonight’s dinner was local cuisine, which was very tasty.

The next morning, our man carried our luggage back down the hill for us. Mr. Nie picked us up to take us to our next adventure…Hangzhou.

Pink is the name Eleri has given her little pink blanket. She got it when she was born from the Texas cousins, Mac & Pat. Pink is the one item she sleeps with every night. Pink at one time was fuzzy on one side and silk on the other. Now, Pink has been repaired by Aunt Nancy so many times I am not sure there is any original material left on Pink. When Elle was baby, she peeled the fuzzy side off when it started to rip. Aunt Nancy repaired the fuzzy side with a replacement silk.

When Pink was fuzzy

Pink with the replacement silk

Pink’s original silk side

Pink is VERY special. We no longer allow Pink to travel on Holidays with us. Eleri now has substitute Pinks (the name she gave them). Over the summer, Aunt Nancy and Elle made a new blanket. She named this new blanket, Spotty Pink (but there is no pink on it as it is white and black).

Elle sleeps with a whole bed full of animals. They all wait at the bottom to see who gets to sleep with her and Pink. This is what the bottom of Elle’s bed looks like. Good thing she is short and her sleepmates can take up the bottom half of the bed.

A couple of her favorite sleep buddies that have a funny story are Rabbit and No Name. Rabbit she picked out in Nebraska when she was 3. I had wanted to wait to buy YET another stuffed animals to see if she lost interested. But, she said, “no, I want Rabbit”. Rabbit has since been a part of the favorite animal group that is always on her bed. No Name was a Christmas mishap. Santa had given Eleri a robot dog that didn’t do much but bark. We worked out the details with Santa to take it back and she could pick out another dog. She picked out this dog which cost about $7 compared to the Santa robot dog of $30. She was happy with this fluffy dog that didn’t do anything. We asked the name of her new dog and she said No Name. No Name is still his name.

And, this is what Emersyn’s bed looks like.

Mimi had given the girls each a Martha Stewart craft kit of “Creepy Creature Decorations” for their birthdays – the night before we left America. It looked like a fun Halloween project so I threw them in the bags being packed for Shanghai. With Jim in the States for two weeks, I picked a slow Sunday to have some craft fun. I pulled the boxes out to read what we needed. Hum, the beautifully packaged Martha Stewart craft read…”pour glitter, sold separately, into a plastic bag (sold separately). Paint each creature with glittering glue, also sold separately, and put into the bag of glitter.” So, the craft came with the silly plastic spiders ONLY. I should have read the box before throwing them into the bags. I can’t run to Target to get the glue and glitter – SOLD SEPARATELY!! I did sort through my stash of crafts to find the needed items. The girls and I spent a fun Sunday afternoon gluing and glittering spiders.

Friday was a no school day and a perfect day for birthdays.

For Erin’s 8th birthday, she invited her 3rd grade friends and Eleri to a pottery party. It was very sweet of her to include Eleri. Eleri plays with Erin (Kelly’s little sister), Sophie (Sean’s little sister) and Riley (Avery’s little sister). Elle plays with them because they are the “little sister gang”.

On the same afternoon, Emersyn and Kelly were at Avery’s birthday party. Faith had arranged for a “Birthday Extravaganza”. The fun started at 2pm with fun at the Bishops house followed by “glam it up time” for the nights events. Dinner and the Chinese Acrobat show for a big girls night out. All back to the Bishop house for a sleep over. Faith sure makes a hard act to follow!

Dinner Fun

It was a fun birthday weekend. My job, along with Mr. Nie, was transportation. I took Emersyn, Eleri and Sophie to Jinqiao. First stop was Mary’s house to drop of Sophie and Elle. Then, we picked-up Kelly and Laura (she lives in the same Green Villas compound as Kelly). I took Emersyn, Kelly and Laura to Faith’s house for Avery’s party. I picked up Riley to take back to Mary’s for Erin’s party. Then, I drove a group of the girls to the pottery place in Puxi. Elle spent the night at Lili’s after the party. So, Saturday morning, I did it all in reverse picking up and dropping girls where they belong!
