Permalink The forecast for the weekend was RAIN, RAIN and more RAIN. We woke to pouring rain on Saturday. I called my friend, Jennifer, to see if we could cancel. She said NO! I really did not want to spend the raining weekend camping. Elle said she wanted to go in the rain. At least we had made arrangements to go in our vans instead of the bus. We had three families traveling by van so we needed two vans each way. We decided the kids in one van and the adults in another…looking better all the time! The other two families were Faith with her girls, Avery (10) & Riley (8) and Jennifer with her daughter, Sophie (8).
We arrived at camp at Daqian Ranch…in the rain. We loaded our luggage to our cabins…in the rain. The cabins were nice – my kind of camping. Each cabin had a bathroom with a common area space downstairs. Upstairs were mattresses on the floor. Sleeping in our cabin were four girls and four Moms. All Daisies had to have a Mom attend with them. We had a 5th girl, Allie, joining us for activities, but sleeping in a different cabin. Her Mom was doing ALL the cooking – a very big task. There were over 300 people at the camp-out. Allie and Elle were the only Kindergartners at the camp-out. The other Daisies were all first graders.

The Ranch had these covered walkways throughout the grounds.

After dropping our bags, the first item on the schedule was lunch – good as I was hungry! Lunch was grilled chicken, cheese and burrito wraps. A very kid-friendly delicious meal!

Emmy’s group was given these headbands. It was great for me as I could look for the blue headbands to find her group. The headbands were given to the Junior Girls.

Our first activity was making a edible campfire. We did this in the covered pavilion since it was still raining. The girls had fun making this campfire. I do have to add that the girls had red licorice nibbles to make their fire – someone must have planned because you can not find them in Shanghai. The crafts were all pre-planned and organized for the weekend. As all of camp organization was parent volunteer, some Moms did a lot of work for our girls to have a good time.

The next craft was the God’s eye. After the Moms got a making lesson from the 8 year-olds Brownies, we were ready to show the younger girls. Elle got the hang of it right away, which was amazing for being the youngest one in the group.
 Elle making her God’s eye
We went back to our cabin to enjoy our snack of popcorn and pretzels. The girls had fun jumping on the beds. Next on the scheduled was water activities. About the time we were to begin our raft ride, the rain had stopped. The raft was a bamboo raft with about 5 benches. The girls had to put on a onesize fit all life vest that would have slid right off had anyone fell in, but it wasn’t deep.

After the raft ride, the girls had time in the balls. Elle was ready to go – a surprised since she had no interested in Phuket. She had fun running like a hamster in the ball.

Dinner this evening was ‘hobo packets’ the girls made. The girls put ground beef and cut-up carrots and potatoes on foil. They wrapped it up and put their names on their packet. It was put on the grills to cook for 10 minutes and dinner was ready. It was a fun and tasty meal. As an adult, my packet could have used some spices, but a fun meal.
After dinner, the girls wrote notes on a lantern to be sent off. A candle was added to the base and the lanterns were released.

The most important after-dinner activity was smores! Graham crackers are hard to find in Shanghai and when you find them, they cost 68rmb/$10 a box. Both the girls love them, so when I can find them, I pay the price. Marshmallows aren’t cheap either – these were expensive smores the girls were enjoying. Emmy’s group was the smore helpers. They would help the younger girls put their smores together as they came back with toasted marshmallows. Everyone enjoyed the smores. The rain began again as we were finishing. I do have to say the rain has been kind to us – the breaks in the rain have been at the right time.

We went back to our cabin to get four little girls ready for bed. With jammies on and teeth brushed, they settled into the fun upstairs. We heard many giggles and jumping from the upstairs. The girls went to bed around 10pm. The Moms stayed up talking until 12:30am. It was a fun group of Moms as I only knew Molly’s Mom, Julie. I had to go all the way to camp to meet a Yanlord family – Maddie and her Mom, Roz. The other Mom and leader of our group was Missy, Faith’s Mom.
Sunday morning began with breakfast at 7:30am. My friends, Faith and Jennifer, got up at 5am to help cook. They had 8-year olds with plenty of parent help. Also, both are the type to jump in when help is needed. Faith helped to cook all day yesterday, also. I don’t think she will be back as she worked extra hard this weekend. Again, breakfast was amazingly good with fresh potatoes and egg muffin sandwiches.
I tried to take photos of Emersyn when ever our paths crossed. This was a weekend for Eleri. It was really good for both girls. Emmy was given more independence as I had to be with Eleri. Eleri had me all to herself all weekend.

At one point, the Moms had decided to take our bags to the front building in shifts since the girls were not going to help much with the carrying. I took my stuff and then helped Emmy. I was gone longer and at some point Elle lost the other girls. Jennifer found her wondering around all alone and was bring her to the covered pavilion. Missy gathered her back to the group. When I saw Jennifer and Faith, they were giving me a bad time about having ONLY one child to watch and she was lost!

We had no rain on Sunday. The girls were schedule for pony rides. The horse area was muddy, but the girls were given a ride around. They were only allowed one ride. However, if they went with an adult, they could have two rides. I had Emmy go with Elle on my turn as Emmy’s Junior girls were not doing pony rides. They had different activities.

After pony rides, we enjoyed snack and fun on the playground.

Our last activities were a scavenger hunt and water balloon toss. The girls enjoyed the water balloons the most.

Emmy at the covered pavilion doing her knot activity that Jennifer was leading. Jennifer was practicing her knots in the van on the way to camp. Elle wanted to know why she didn’t get to do knots with Jennifer.

We had hotdog lunch and said good-by to a fun weekend. Elle can’t wait to go again next year!

Permalink My friend, Ginny is leaving Shanghai to move back to America. I met Ginny during my first week in Shanghai. She had children the same age as mine. She had a first grader, Dan, and a 2-year old, Clare plus another boy, Joey, in the middle. Clare and Elle played together often as 2-year olds…until they began school at 3. A ladies Expo trip was arranged to spend the day with Ginny as a farewell.
We met at the ferry at 8:15am to begin another adventure day at the Expo. We had six ladies on our Expo adventure, Ginny, Mary, Gloria, Donna, Fawn and me.
Ireland Pavilion – Ireland was our first stop of the day. The outside seemed to have little to do with Ireland. It did have grass around it.

Ginny, Mary, Gloria, Donna & Fawn
Turkey Pavilion – Turkey was next to Ireland with a line that was moving…so it was the next stop.

 Donna, Ginny & Mary
Norway Pavilion – The Norway Pavilion was about nature and using nature for energy. The frame of the building was designed to keep the building cool without air conditioning.

Ginny & Gloria in the stream of fresh air

Greece Pavilion – By the time we got to Greece, we were hungry. We thought it would be a good stop for lunch. We decided we would begin the tour of the pavilion at the food point. We sat down to enjoy so-so food that was expensive. We paid 110rmb/$16 for a meat pie.

Ginny, Gloria, Mary, Fawn & Brenda
Estonia Pavilion – Estonia Pavilion was next to Greece with no lines. We would all agree this was a rather boring pavilion. There were these big pigs in the building. The thought was to drop your ideas into the “piggy bank”.

Monaco Pavilion – The Monaco Pavilion had a good video on the “rock” of Monaco and the history of how it grew. I enjoyed the video and the history of Monaco.

Spain Pavilion – The Spain Pavilion was very fun from the outside, but we didn’t go in as the line was over 2 hours – pass!

Iceland Pavilion – The Iceland Pavilion was small, but had a video of the the beauty of Iceland. It was interesting to watch all the beautiful landscapes of Iceland.

Ukraine Pavilion – The Ukraine Pavilion was next to Iceland with no lines. Again, nothing inside so we walked through very fast. The outside was better than the inside.

Great Britain Pavilion – The Great Britain Pavilion is very interesting. We saw it from the outside only. The pavilion looks like a box with thousands of spines that hover without visible support. It is a cube formed by more than 60, 000 slim and transparent acrylic rods containing seeds of different plants that were collected in a bio-diversity project.

Luxemburg Pavilion – The Luxemburg Pavilion was very large with outdoor and indoor sites. A very pretty Pavilion to enjoy the flowers.

 Ginny, Brenda & Mary

Peru Pavilion – I have no photo of Peru as my battery was low. We enjoyed the food and wine in the Peru Pavilion. We stopped for a glass of wine and some tasty meats – much cheaper than lunch in Greece.
USA Pavilion – The USA Pavilion was a photo stop on our way out.

It was another fun day at the Expo. We saw many “C” listed Pavilions. I don’t know if I will see any “A” listed Pavilions as standing in line for 2 hours seems to take away the fun. It is fun to walk around and see the outsides of all the Pavilions.

Permalink Lili is Elle’s best friend…they are two peas in a pod. Lili has been in the same class with Eleri for the past three years at Dulwich. Lili is the ONLY reason Elle wants to stay at Dulwich. In the past, we have asked Lili to spend the night, but she wasn’t ready. After the birthday party, we had made plans for Lili to stay for an afternoon play and to have dinner with us. She said she would like to spend the night and did with no problems. She had a great time for her very first sleep-over.
All sleep-overs require a bubble bath with overflowing bubbles. The girls had been playing in the sand pit, therefore, they were extra dirty.

Since Eleri’s birthday is in August and she has no friends in America, we pick a weekend for her party to share with her friends prior to the end of school. Elle wanted a butterfly and garden party. She invited 8 girls from her class. At first, she only wanted 4 girls, but kept adding a girl!
Jim and I decorated the house for her party the night before. Elle woke up to see all the fun decorations waiting for her party.

Friday was a busy day with Field Day for Emersyn. By the time I started to bake the family chocolate cake, it was 8:30pm. As I began to measure and mix the indgredeints, I realized the last time Jim did the grocery run to City Shop, he got whole wheat flour – not the best for a chocolate cake. Jim hopped on his scooter to run over to city Shop before they closed. At 9pm, I began making the cake!
On Saturday, Elle helped me to make the frosting and decorate. It is all about pouring the sprinkles on the cake. While Jim was at City Shop last night, he picked up some can white frosting as Elle wanted to put a butterfly in the middle. Jim used some concentrated food coloring, not knowing it was concentrated. He put a blue and pink butterfly in the middle of the cake. When we tasted the pink frosting it was horrible from too much food coloring. Jim had to salvage the cake by scrapping the pink & blue butterfly off and put a new one on with just white frosting. The can frosting was ruining my HOMEMADE yummy frosting…but, it was what Elle wanted!

Permalink When you wear a school uniform every day, the free dress days are very important. I have realized my girl only choose their clothes one day a week. During soccer season, they get up and put on their soccer uniform which leaves only Saturday. The fact that they only have one day a week to choose clothes for themselves is reflected in how long it takes to find something to wear and more times that not, it is all wrong – wrong weather, wrong color scheme or wrong outfit for what we are doing. I gave up on Elle a long time ago and she just wears plaids, stripes and poka-dots together because it makes her happy.
Here is a re-cap of the free dress days this last school year for both girls. Eleri’s British school has fewer dress day that Emersyn’s “American” school. Eleri also has a much more formal uniform policy – there is a formal outfit, a winter outfit, a summer outfit and a PE kit. Emersyn on the other hand is pretty relaxed – where the Concordia shirt with some navy blue bottoms – long pants, shorts, or skirt; it does not matter.
April 22 – Earth Day. April 22 was free green dress day at Dulwitch for Earth Day. Elle had fun finding everything green – green dress, green socks, green headband, green necklace & a green hand bag. She went skipping to school with the biggest smile on her face.

May 28 – Pajama Day always a fun one. Emersyn missed the school-wide PJ day due to her field trip to Tongli. The grades 3/4 were given their own day to wear pajamas to school. These pj’s are extra special to Emmy. She made them last summer with Aunt Nancy – she is very proud of them!

Permalink As another school year comes to the end, we finish girl scouts with a bridging ceremony. Girls bridge from Daisy to Brownies to Juniors. Emersyn and Eleri are not bridging, but we enjoyed the ceremony.
This is Emersyn’s 4th year in Girls Scouts. She started as a Brownie in grade 1 & 2. She bridge to a Junior Scout for grade 3 & 4.
Eleri has enjoyed her first year as a Daisy. She meets with other Concordia kindergartners for her meetings. They meet once a month. Elle’s leaders have told me she does fine in all the meetings even though she doesn’t really know the girls, as the only outside Concordia student. She is part of the Concordia Girl Scouts because I am a leader.
Mary Humes and I are leaders for the second year for Emersyn’s grade. We had ten girls last year in our troop. Nine of the girls returned to stay in our troop, plus three more for a total of 12 girls. Mary and I work well as a team. We have had some fun projects with the girls this year.
 A good Team
We started the year by “adopting” Eleri’s Daisy troop. Each Junior Girl Scout had a Daisy Scout to help throughout the year. Our Juniors would leave cards and fun items in their cubby during the year. We finished off our Daisy adoption project by helping the Daisies earn the patch “It’s a Girl Thing”. The Junior girls provided a spa day for the Daisies by doing hair, nails and tattoos. All the girls had fun.
 Megan beautifying Eleri’s nail
The Junior girls meet twice a month. Concordia is very supportive of the Scout program at the school. The meetings are held in the classrooms. Since Elle only meets once a month, she is a “mascot” in our meetings once a month. She was at the meetings last year, also.
Our girls made posters for the Giving Tree Project. The posters were hung around the school to help fill the bags for the migrant school children.

We tie dyed t-shirts. The tie dye kits come from American so it requires some planning. The t-shirts come from my favorite store, Deathlon, and cost all of 39rmb/$5. The girls love this activity.

My favorite project of the year was the Flat Stacie. The girls were given a Flat Stacie to dress, draw and decorate. We used scrap materials to make clothes. It was fun to see what fun ideas the girls created for their Flat Stacie. Elle was at this meeting. She designed her doll exactly how she wanted. I helped her to glue it all together.
The girls with their Flat Stacie
Emersyn’s Flat Stacie is the one on the left dressed in blue/black shirt and pants. Eleri’s Flat Stacie is at the top right side dressed in a red shirt and a pink skirt. She wanted to use material to make “platts” braids for her girl.
 Friendship circle

Each girl was given a book to write down an adventure before sending it off to Holland. We took the Flat Stacies to Yangshuo for an adventure. Emersyn wrote in her book about the weekend. I wrote in Elle’s book!!

We finished the year off with a spa day at Beauty 7. The girls loved the fun. The girls got their nails painted, hot rock massage on their feet/legs and tattoos. They enjoyed pizza, rice krispy treats and strawberries. One comment – only in China!! It cost 110rmb/$16 per girl.

Permalink When things don’t work around our apartment, I evaluate if I REALLY need to have it fixed. I can call someone at Yanlord to come and “look” at it. Look at it is about all they do because fixing is a whole different concept. My dishwasher broke…can NOT live without a dishwasher. Of course, it breaks just as Imelda is getting ready to leave for the Philippines due to visa issues.
I get the usual Chinese man that “looks” at it. This look usually means just that – look without touching anything. He declares he can’t fix it and will send someone else. No surprise there! Someone else comes and still not fixed. I was at school all day, therefore, Imelda managed the maintenance man. All this is just before Spring Break so I will deal with it when I get back from Phuket.
Upon returning, I called our real estate agent, Woody, to get someone over to fix it…I tell Woody to send someone to fix it and not just look at it. It is interesting here that the agent who places you in your home doesn’t just finish the service with you once you are moved in. When we have issues, we call Woody.
Due to the World Expo opening, the government had declared a holiday for Monday & Tuesday, May 3 & 4. This was helpful as Jim was home to speak Chinese with the worker. When the maintenance man came to look at the dishwasher, we discover the Yanlord maintenance man took the computer board. I had no idea as Imelda was the one here when he came (Imelda is now gone, also). Woody tracked down the board, had them repaired it (we think) and rescheduled the maintenance man to come back on Sunday.
Sunday was Mother’s day. I had planned to be home while Jim took the girls to soccer. Our Mother’s Day plans got changed when the rain came to Shanghai – we decided to go to brunch with our friends. Jim came to brunch late so he could deal with the maintenance man. The repaired computer board didn’t work and it was decided to take the dishwasher away to fix it. Two men carry it out of the apartment.
The next step would be to replace the computer board. Again, the way to fix things in China – if you don’t know, just replace it. The new computer board cost 1, 400rmb ($205). They brought back my dishwasher with the new installed computer board and left. Oh, but of course, it still didn’t work! Another call to Woody, another repair visit and they have taken the dishwasher away, again!
When I move back to America, I will probably be the only person that hands over a check to the repair man with a smile. The fact that someone can actually fix something is worth the cost. Still no dishwasher…four weeks since we began this process.

Permalink For Mother’s Day, our friends had organized a brunch. We had decided to pass on going to brunch since we had soccer. Based on our busy schedules, we are missing half the season. However, the weather decided we should enjoy time with our friends as it was raining. I called to add our family to the reservation. Just as we were leaving for brunch, we got a call that the dishwasher repair man was at our house…oh, we forgot. Jim stayed home to deal with the dishwasher while I took the girls to brunch. Mr. Nie would come back and get Jim after dropping us off.
Jim joined us about an hour later – dishwasher not fixed. We enjoy a long lunch with our friends, the Humes, the Jenkins and the Bishops.
