It’s Spring Break for the girls and Quingming Chinese holiday for Jim. Jim has Monday and Tuesday off for Ching Ming – Tomb Sweeping Day. The Qingming Festival (清明节, Ching Ming Festival in Hong Kong), Ancestors Day or Tomb Sweeping Day is a traditional Chinese festival on the 104th day after the winter solstice. The Qingming festival falls on the first day of the fifth solar term, named Qingming. Its name denotes a time for people to go outside and enjoy the greenery of springtime (踏青, “treading on the greenery”) and tend to the graves of departed ones.

There is a reason our blog is full of fun adventure travels – we have these weeks off during the school year for a perfect family get away. There is a week in October for Chinese National Day, two weeks for Christmas, a week for Chinese New Year and a week in March/April for Spring break. However, we are staying home for our second stay-cation of the school year. It has been a long, cold winter with no sun. It would be nice to go find the sun, but it is also nice having no schedules to keep. Roxi likes when we have a stay-cation.

On Saturday and Sunday, Jim was completing his pool dives in Puxi. He missed the pool dives with the class last weekend since he was in Hong Kong at 7’s. Jim left the house at 7:00am to return around 2:00pm. He was tired after diving all day, but loved it. He is thrilled to be getting PADI dive certified with Emersyn.

The girls, Roxi and I hung around Yanlord. We had nice weather to enjoy the gardens with Roxi. On Saturday morning, I sent Emersyn on her way for tennis lesson at 8:30am. Eleri and I took Roxi down to the “doggy play date”. At 8am on the weekends, a group of us meet in the dog area for a “doogy play date”. Roxi loves this time to run with her buddies. The dog park was full and Roxi was in dog heaven. Eleri and I stayed in the garden until almost 11:00, therefore, we had a very tired and happy puppy! We spent the afternoon relaxing and catching up on our “to-do” lists. Sunday morning was about the same with the dog play date most of the morning and relaxing at home.

Monday morning I woke up to the sound of packing taping ripping. It was 6:30am and I could only guess what Eleri was making. I rolled over for a bit longer, but couldn’t sleep with the loud sound of tape ripping. I came out to see what was keeping Eleri busy all morning. She had made a ping pong table. It didn’t work as the balls didn’t bounce off the cardboard, but it looked good. She cut out cardboard paddles for her table.

Since we were all up early, we took Roxi down to find the weekend dog play date was in full swing. All the dog owners had the Chinese holiday off and the sun had arrived in Shanghai for a lovely morning in the dog park. The dogs were thrilled to see their buddies three days in a row.

Lili was in town for Spring break, also. The family had to cancel their trip to Thailand because her father had surgery on his ankle. While waiting for Lili to come for a sleepover, Eleri made herself into a French man. She is good at keeping herself busy! Emersyn was busy reading her book – mostly her ipad these days. She downloads about a book a week with her love of reading and loving the extra time to read.

When Lili arrived, the girls went swimming in the indoor pool. They had fun splashing around and being silly. We tend to only use the indoor pool when friends are over to play. Upon returning from the pool, I put the girls in the big tub in our bathroom. They said they didn’t want bubbles, but I left the bubbles out for them…BIG mistake. They poured most of the bottle into the tub, turned on the jets and there were bubbles everywhere! They had fun laughing and giggling for over an hour. It only took 10 minutes to clean up the mess so well worth the laughter and fun!

Lili played all day Tuesday with time in the garden and time in the toy room to wii. These two always have fun together and are always laughing. Lili went home after 4pm. The Bishops arrived at 5pm. The adults (Faith & Dan, Jennifer & Scott and us) were having an adult dinner out at my favorite place on the Bund, Lost Heaven. The Bishop girls, Avery & Riley, were spending the night. We order pizzas for the girls and they were happy to spend the night watching movies. We enjoyed a lovely night out. We took the ferry across the river on a beautiful night to enjoy the view.

Wednesday was kites on the river. Emersyn wanted to fly kites during Spring Break. Jim had the idea of walking the two blocks to the river. The Bishops and the Jenkins joined us for kites on the river. We took Roxi and Spanky (the Jenkins’ dog) with us. It was a beautiful day for flying kites – warm with a nice breeze. Eleri had the first kite to go in the river, but we just pulled it in to send it back out flying over the river.

The kids flew kites for about an hour when they found new entertainment – Roxi bush jumping. She is a jumper with style pulling her back legs way up – like a deer. She doesn’t need much room as she jumps very gracefully. She does this all the time when I am walking her in the gardens. She falls behind from sniffing and will take the short cut of jumping the bush to catch me. She has only missed once when she jumped a bush near the pool that was about one and half the size of the red bush below. She was a bit surprised by the width as most of the bushes seem to be trimmed to the same width.

It was time to walk down the river to Paulaner’s for beer and pretzels. The gang of kids had fun on the walk posing with the various status along the riverfront.

It is a Chinese holiday, therefore, the restaurant was packed as everyone had the same idea…a drink along the river outside on this beautiful day. The kids took up the grass area with the dogs. Jim found us chairs to sit on to enjoy the view. After our afternoon fun, we went home for a quiet family evening after a two-night sleepover.

Jim’s Chinese holiday ended and he was back to work for Thursday and Friday. The Lyon ladies still had a few more days to play. On Thursday, Elle disappeared to Lili’s all day. On Wednesday night as I tucked Eleri in bed, I reminder her she need to get up tomorrow morning to go to work with Dad. She asked how long she had to be at Dad’s office? I laughed as she took it literally she had to go to work with Dad. She was very happy when I explained she was only riding to work with Dad. Mr. Nie would drop her off at Lili’s after dropping Dad off at the office. Bindi took the girls to a park all day and then a sleepover at Lili’s house.

No Dad, no Eleri, therefore, Emersyn and I took advantage of the time for a little one on one girl time. We walked to the Super Brand Mall for some shopping and lunch. We didn’t find anything to buy in the shopping department, but we had a lovely lunch at Din Tai Fung – a favorite dumpling restaurant. We walked home enjoying the beautiful afternoon.

Friday was another girl day with lunch with Dad. Emersyn and I drove out to Jinqiao earl so we could do a bit of shopping for her dive trip at Decathlon (my favorite store) before picking up Eleri. We picked Eleri up at Lili’s house to drive back to Decathlon. We had promised the girls rollerblades as an Easter gift. Eleri has never had a pair of rollerblades. Emersyn’s rollerblades we bought when we arrived in Shanghai six years ago. The rollerblades at Decathlon are very nice at reasonable prices of 200rmb for Eleri and 300rmb for Emersyn.

Once we had our rollerblades in hand, we drove to the Kerry Center to have lunch with Jim. Of course, we ate at the Blue Frog. After sending Jim back to work, the girls and I went for some nail spa time at The Dragonfly. The Dragonfly has opened a branch in the Kerry Center. Emersyn is now full price at the age of 11 – takes away the extra cheap part of getting the girls’ nails done. Eleri still has a few more years at half price. We went home to strap on the new blades and hit the gardens. Roxi was happy to enjoy the new outdoor gear with us!

Saturday I became Baker Brenda. I made a double bath of cookies for Faith’s house on Easter Sunday. I made a double batch of cupcakes (86 cupcakes) for Emersyn to take to school. She wanted to raise money for the charity of the month, Baobei. I was in the kitchen from 9am to 5pm. My next bake will be birthday cakes in May.

Sunday Easter was spent at Faith’s house. See the post, Easter in Shanghai.

Fall Carnival was moved to Spring Carnival for the first time this year. As a room Mom, Spring Carnival is easier to organize the volunteers needed for the day. This is an event for the ES children organized by the PSO (Parent Support Organization). Each room has the responsible for running a booth at the carnival. A committee of volunteers organizes this day for the children.

Eleri loves the “Donut on a String” game. She knows the trick to get under the donut to get the first bite. After the first bite is taken, the donut is given to the children to enjoy as their prize. This is the booth Eleri’s class parents are responsible to manage for the day. It is a fun and easy booth.

Eleri spent her time at carnival with her friend, Anna.

Anna & Eleri with their donuts

Eleri with her teacher, Ms Johnson

“The best waiter” game is always a fun one. The children fill their cup up with water. Then, they run through an obstacle course with their full cup of water. The child with the most water still in their cup is the winner. If they win, the child gets a small prize. Most games give the children a small piece of candy for playing.

ready, set and go

to the finish line

After playing all the games, the girls had fun at the bouncy slide.

Eleri’s class at the end of the fun.

After Eleri finished her time at carnival, I went to work the class game, “donut on a string”. One of Eleri’s classmates Mom had the idea to have slushies delivered – love those quick thinking Moms with good ideas!

Another installation of the annual pilgrimage to Hong Kong for executive spring break. This year, Jim was accompanied by Dan Bishop (3rd year), Dan Brennan (newbie), and Paul Tayler (newbie). Brennan has been on other trips with the Shanghai group – Yangshuo. Tayler, our token Welsh guy, is new to Shanghai, but has jumped in deep.

The slogan for the weekend

The CREW – Bishop, Brennan, Tayler, Lyon

Bishop & Tayler “resting”!

Brennan going strong!

Eleri’s Spring school trip is to the Shanghai zoo. It has been a long, wet winter and Spring hasn’t sprung! The forecast for the week was rain every day but Wednesday, the day of the field trip. The week’s forecast was correct. It rain every day, but Wednesday. We had a beautiful day to enjoy the animals at the zoo.

Eleri at the Zoo entrance

The children were to take photos and get facts about three animals they would like to do further research for a project. However, getting the facts on the animals was not a simple task as many of the signs were in Chinese only. We did get photos. The girls had fun running around the zoo with their cameras.

Snack break was first on the agenda for my group of girls. The bus ride from Jinqiao to Hongqiao in Puxi is over an hour. The girls were hungry as they have snack in the classroom around 9:30am everyday.

Tiffany, Claire, Eleri & Miranda

After seeing the monkeys, we ran to the gorilla exhibit. Eleri had fun playing with the puzzle post outside.

The girls compared their arm spans to that of a gorilla…it took more than one girl to get the same span.

Eleri compared her hand to the size of a gorilla’s hand.

Next, we stopped by to see the big cats. The girls had more fun taking photos with the statures than the animals. The lions and tigers were all sleeping in the sun – enjoying the sun for the first time in weeks/months. We decided to eat our packed lunches on the benches near the lions. The crew was hungry.

Eleri liked being the map reader. The zoo is a large zoo in the middle of this big City. The map wasn’t the best so we had fun seeing what we found along the way.

We worked our way over to the zebras and giraffes. Eleri decided the zebra would be a good animal for her project since she saw them in South Africa.

The one bad thing about a zoo in China is that the locals feed the animals. This bear is waiting for more bread to be tossed to him. There are signs that say to not feed the animals, but it doesn’t stop anyone.

The girls wanted more statue photos. I laughed and told the girls the next exhibit we need a photo of them with a real animal. The next exhibit was the wolves and they were too far away.

We saw all kinds of animal this day and about half the zoo – the girls had a blast running around together. We met at the entrance at 1:00pm to load back on the buses. It was a lovely day at the zoo with a little sunshine!

Eleri’s school project – to build a Leprechaun trap. This is Eleri’s favorite kind of project as it had the word BUILD in it. Eleri’s favorite building partner is Jim, of course. They talked about the design and how Eleri wanted to build her trap. The trap was due at school on March 15, but Eleri’s trap was finished over the weekend. She spent Saturday designing, glueing and making it sparkle. She needed glitter because Leprechaun’s like shiny and glitter. She was so excited to take her Leprechaun trap to school to demonstrate how it works.

The surprise look when she catches a Leprechaun!

On Friday night, Eleri’s friend, Anna, spent the night. Eleri and Anna were busy making another Leprechaun trap all evening. They hot glued the boxes together, then, they cut, decorated and glittered their trap. The trap door was open in the morning, but no Leprechaun. The girls had hot glued the coins to the trap, therefore, the mischief Leprechaun couldn’t take them!

Saturday morning, Eleri made more traps in her quest to catch a Leprechaun on the last night. She had a little town of traps.

Eleri didn’t catch a Leprechaun this year…maybe next year!

Emersyn signed up for the Marine Ecology Research Program trip to Phuket, Thailand. Two high school teachers, Mr. Klammer and Mr. Umphenour, take a group of ten students to Thailand to do research on a reef. This is the fifth and final trip to this reef. The data is collected and sent to an University for further study. The age limit is 12. Emersyn turns 12 just ten days before the trip. She is the youngest in the group. On March 24 & March 25, she will begin water training with pool dives. We purchased all her dive equipment in Australia at Christmas.

To prepare for the dives and to be open water certified, the students meet twice a week from 7:00 – 8:45pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for two months. The students take a quiz on Thursdays from the material on Tuesdays. Jim attended the first class to see what it was all about. The teachers asked if he wanted to continue to join the class and get dive certified. Jim jumped on that one. The cost to Jim is 1, 500rmb ($235). The teachers are both PADI dive certified instructions. They do not charge for their time they give to the students. Jim misses about a class a week since his travel schedule has been more demanding. Emersyn has enjoyed having him in the class. Anytime the teachers need a test subject, the class has fun using Jim.

Jim will miss the pool dive because he will be off playing at Hong Kong 7’s. Mr. Klammer has arranged for him to do the dive the following weekend. Jim did point out the fact that Emersyn has her own dive equipment, but he has none. He wasn’t on the dive team when we were in Australia. He will try to join the class for two days of diving in Thailand to complete his certification. He can not stay on the boat as it is full. However, he is fine in a “backpacker special”.

The experience has been so positive for Emersyn. She has a new interest in science – teachers do make a difference in a child’s life. Mr. Klammer and Mr. Umphenour are those kinds of teachers. They love science and make it fun. Soon, Jim and Emersyn will be off diving on our next beach holiday…because they can!

Emersyn joined the middle school volleyball team. The school combines 5th & 6th grade girls and boys. This year, the children were divided up into five teams. Practice for volleyball is Tuesday and Friday from 3:30-5:30. Tuesdays are game days. The Concordia teams play each other and other schools in the area. However, there are limited number of schools that offer middle school volleyball.

Emersyn keeping score during a “break” from her game.

In action at her game…bump.

…serve.

…and set.

Emersyn had fun with volleyball. We have joked it has been March Madness in our house – not anything to do with basketball. Volleyball and dive classes were scheduled for February and March. Emersyn has had a crazy schedule with tennis on Monday, volleyball and dive on Tuesday, guitar on Wednesday and dive on Thursday. Both volleyball and dive classes finish in March.

Emersyn’s band concert was “An Evening of Music”. The concert include the Jazz Band, 6th Grade Band, Wind Ensemble, 7th & 8th Grade Band and the High School band. A LONG evening of music. The concert lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes. Eleri was a trooper for a late night of entertainment on a school night.

Each group played three songs with the high school band playing five songs.

The 6th Grade Band played:

Triton Fanfare
Ancient Chinese Secret
Chester Variations

At the last concert, we couldn’t see Emersyn. Therefore, we sat in the balcony so we could see our beautiful saxophone player.

Since Emersyn needs to be at school at 6:30pm and Jim now works near school. The girls and I stayed at school to do homework in the cafe. Then, we met Jim at the Blue Frog at the Kerry Center for dinner. We had nice full tummies to enjoy the concert.

Every month the Elementary students have chapel. Each chapel is led by a class. Today, chapel was led by Ms Johnson’s Grade 2 class (Eleri’s) and Ms Shepard’s Grade 1 class. Eleri has been practicing all week. The skit was about the 12 disciples.

The first song the children sang was “There were Twelve Disciples”. This song is short, but was harder to memorize as Eleri had to know all the disciples names.

Eleri had a speaking part. She did very well as we talk about speaking slowly.

She said very clear and slowly: We show that we are disciples of Jesus by using kind words to everyone. I know this can be hard especially when we are angry or upset.

As she was saying her lines, this image was on the overhead projector.

The last song the children sang was “I will Follow Him”. This is the song from Sister Act.

Of course, the song was sung with actions.

At the end, Eleri was all smiles.

Jim was able to attend chapel. Now, with his office ten minutes from school, it is easier for him to make school functions.

Part of cleaning out the guest room was cleaning out MY cabinet full of stuff/junk. One of the items I tossed out was the cloth covered boxes. My vases from Jingdezhen came in these boxes. No more room for empty boxes. But, Eleri had to play with them before they went out, of course.

Eleri proving she can still fit

I took photos of Eleri with her life size art. But, I couldn’t throw them out. I rolled them back up and shoved them in the corner! Maybe the day we move back to America they get tossed in the rubish.
