When the students go to APAC competition, they stay with a homestay from the school hosting. Concordia was hosting APAC band this year. Emersyn’s Japan homestay, Esther, from the Canadian Academy was coming to Shanghai for APAC band. We requested to have Esther and a friend stay with us. Esther, Emersyn and Nicholle have stayed in touch since APAC Tennis in Japan.

The girls arrived on Wednesday night. Esther Jung is a junior from Korea and Natsuki Maduda is a sophomore from Japan studying at the Canadian Academy. Nicholle and Emersyn took the girls to the Kerry for dinner and shopping at H&M.

I cleaned the toy room to make space for the girls. Esther and Natsuki moved into the toy room – one on the twin bed and one on a blow up mattress. Nicholle moved into Emersyn’s room on the blow up mattress for a house full of girls! Nicholle wanted to be part of the fun with Esther while she was in Shanghai. Nicholle is a junior at Concordia. She took Emersyn under her wing during tennis season and is a very sweet girl.

The APAC girls have a busy schedule with band. Thursday was the only night to take them to dinner. Jim was at school teaching dive classes so we had a girls’ night out. We took the ferry across to the Bund for dinner at Lost Heaven.

The view on the ferry arriving to the Bund.

Lost Heaven is one of my favorite places. We had table in the corner to enjoy all of the tasty food.

On Friday, the APAC girls had practice all day at school and the entire APAC team went to the ERA show in Puxi. Emersyn & Nicholle picked up Esther and Natsuki after the show at 9pm to go to Whisk for desserts. The girls have a curfew of 10pm. They arrived home just after 10pm, but they did not get their curfew call this night…maybe due to the lateness of everyone getting back to Jinqiao from Puxi.

On Saturday, the APAC girls had practice all day and the concert. Nicholle and Emersyn attend the concert to support the girls. They didn’t arrive home until after 10pm, after their curfew call! The girls stayed up until 3am talking and having fun. The girls were out the door at 5:30am for their flights. Nicolle and Emersyn rode with them to school. When Emersyn and Nicholle arrived back at our house, they did homework and took a morning nap.

It was fun having the APAC girls and Nicholle.

The Shanghai skyline always has red lights for Chinese New Year. This year the WFC had a light show about every 15 minutes. The Chinese Characters would flash along with a goat across the lighted area. Normally, the WFC has blue lights.

Emersyn returned from APAC Forensics to One-Act play performances on Thursday & Friday of February 5 & 6. Emersyn is taking an advance theatre class. In the class, each student wrote an one-act play. They were randomly assigned another students play to direct and cast. Emersyn was given the play written by James Larson. James was directing Emersyn’s play.

Emersyn’s title of her play was “Addiction”.

Emersyn idea for her play resulted from being the only teenager with no phone. At lunch, her friends would all be on their phones searching and on social networks. Since she went from April – December with no phone, she had a good look at the “addiction” of her peers to their devices.

James’ play title was “Under Pressure”.

It was different watching the play noting the content and writing aspects instead of just watching the performance. Emersyn’s play and the play she directed were my two favorite plays. Many of the plays had “heavy” themes while these two plays were “lighter”.

Emersyn auditioned for the High School Forensics team. A upperclass-MUN friend, Christine, wanted her to give it a go. The competition was tough this year with most of the prior years’ team returning. Emersyn did not make the team – no freshman was part of the team this year. Emersyn was first alternate. After a month, one of the girls dropped out and Emersyn was asked to fill in. She was given the categories of the girl leaving. Now, Emersyn needed to “catch-up” with very little time to prepare. The Concordia Forensics team was very supportive to help her get to speed for APAC (Asia Pacific Activity Conference) in Beijing at the end of January.

I really had no idea what this Forensics debate was all about. The students had a showcase Monday and Tuesday before they left for Beijing. Parents could come to watch to give the kids practice before the competition. It was interesting to watch…what a talented group of students.

The categories of Forensics competition:
Original Oratory (OI)
Impromptu (IMP)
Extemporaneous Speaking (EXTEMP)
Solo Acting (SA)
Original Oratory (OO)
Debate

Emersyn is doing debate and EXTEMP. For debate, she is teamed with her friend, Christine. They have prepared speeches on poverty and environment deprivation. The speeches are pros and cons why poverty or environment is more important. Each team member gives their speech. Then, they have crossfire in which they have to come up with questions for the opponent followed by closing statements.

Photos of Emersyn and Christine in their debate with Karis and Michael at the showcase. Once the students finished their presentation, guest teachers attending the showcase gave the students pointers on what they could do to improve – speaking, stage presents, eye contact, etc.

IMG_5489

While Christine gives her speech, Emersyn takes notes to be prepare for crossfire.

IMG_5483

Preparing for crossfire, they get their notes together based on their opponents speech.

IMG_5493

For EXEMPT, Emersyn is given a current event topic and 30 minutes to write a 5-8 minute speech with facts and why or why not to support the issue. This is one of the toughest categories due to the current events and is generally done by upperclass speakers. She is the most nervous for this event.

Original Oratory has the speaker presenting a poem or two poems. It is graded by deliverance of the speech and it must be over 5 minutes and less than 7 minutes. If it is over, points are deducted.

Solo Acting takes someone with talent. One person puts on a play in which the actor must be at the minimum of three different characters. The students that performed for Concordia were amazing to watch.

Impromptu was another interesting categories. The presenter is given a quote, a word or some reference. They have 1-minute to put together a speech that must be 4-8 minutes.

Emersyn left Wednesday morning with her NEW suitcase!

DSC_2270

She had a great time. The APAC team was so supportive of each other – it was the definition of team. She was never treated like the “freshman” as she was in tennis. Again, she was the only freshman on the team. There were two sophomores, 3 juniors and 4 seniors that made up the APAC Forensics team.

All 6 girls were at one homestay which made for a big “slumber” party for the girls. They had dinner out with the boys for lots of team spirit.

Emersyn and Christine made it to the quarter finals in debate. An excellent finished as they made the finals over Karis and Michael who are both juniors. Christine is a sophomore. Many of the other coaches were surprised Emersyn was a freshman as she is an elegant speaker and a forceful debater! She is looking forward to next year’s competition!

Eleri’s 5th grade is studying the American revolution. As part of the study of this unit, the students do a Wax Museum. They can pick any character from the Revolution War/time. When Emersyn did the Wax Museum, she chose Deborah Sampson. We told Eleri she could be any character as long as she wore the SAME costume. Getting items made at the fabric market is no longer cheap! Eleri decided Deborah Sampson was a good choice…hand-me-downs in school events!

Jim had to touch up the gun he made for Emersyn. It is made out of styrofoam so it is easy to dent! Jim spent many hours making the gun and it does look good. It is made from hardware items such as pipes, screws, coils that Jim could find at the “hardware” shops on the street.

DSC_2216

You have to laugh at this goof-ball!

DSC_2217

Eleri’s presentation and speech were completely different than Emersyn’s. Partly due to technology as the 5th graders have iPads for their studies. The students used the iPads for presentation and other notes. Eleri has her iPad under her hat to use for notes.

Eleri had fun making her props. For her button, she took parts out of her “snap circuit” kit so her button would light up. She did have the best high-tech button!

The presentation was held in the PC Commons. When Emersyn did her presentation, it was held in the classrooms. It was nice having all the kids in one room, but it was loud. Sometimes, it was hard to hear what they were saying.

The 5th grade Mandarin classes put on a short performance of a Chinese Taiji dance. An instructor worked with the kids to teach and practice the dance.

First, he did the Taiji dance performance alone.

IMG_5410

Then, we watched four different Mandarin classes perform. The students are assigned to different levels of Mandarin classes based on their ability. Eleri’s class was the last class to perform.

Eleri looked adorable, but she did wear the wrong shoes to school this day! Eleri had good form performing the dance – it must be from her fencing pose!

For 5th and 6th grade, drama is a required class. The students have drama one semester and art the other semester. Eleri finished her drama semester with a drama showcase.

Eleri’s class put on the play, “The 13th Zodiac Animal”. It was written by Mr. Lyon, a 6th grade teacher. Directed by Eleri’s drama teacher, Mr. Rickett. They all did a great job. Eleri was the Dragon – hard to see her face under the dragon mask. Eleri’s performance was at the end of the play. The dragon had been sleeping, but woke to save the day as Cat was tying to become a zodiac animal by lying and cheating.

Eleri is wearing the “Dorothy Tail” from the Wiggles…a must have when Emersyn was little. Always nice when it can be recycled for a costume.

Eleri and I were shopping on the “hardware” street near our house. At one time, the street was filled with funny, but useful little hardware shops. Now, the street is being upscaled. There are still a few hardware shops along the street – not sure how they make money. Eleri needed a few items for her upcoming Drama Showcase and Wax Museum at school. We found what we were looking for, but I had to take a photo of the meat drying!

Ok, the street is still working on “upscaling”.

There was no time to build last night after receiving Santa’s Lego gift. Eleri was up early and ready to begin the next day. The girls have no school on this Monday – a day to unpack from our trip. A day for Eleri to build.

She took out all the parts and the books to her expert, age 16+ Lego set. There are many bags of lego parts and three different books to build the 3-story house/shop.

IMG_5338

IMG_5340

It took her all day with a break to watch a movie to give her mind a rest! But, she was determine to finish the project today.

IMG_5354

IMG_5362

The little orange tool Eleri is holding – a very valuable tool. It is used to take pieces apart. Some of these Lego parts are very small. In the past, I have used tweezers to get them apart. I had purchased one that was in her stocking, but this one came with her set – more needed with even smaller parts!

IMG_5358

Eleri also adds her own touches to improve the house. The fire coming out of the chimney was added by Eleri. She added the bottom parts to the lantern hanging to make them look better. There are always spare parts in all lego kits.

IMG_5373

IMG_5370

Eleri also moved the doors, not following the instructions, as the glass door was better for the bakery and the white door went better with the white trim on the second floor. She informed me all the doors are the same size. Yes, she is her father!

IMG_5369

Eleri loves the detail given to these lego sets.

IMG_5366

IMG_5367

Now that she has done age 16+, she won’t want to go back. She is very proud of her house/shop. This next semester in school is Lego robotics – Eleri is excited!

This is the first year of no belief in Santa – the girls are truly growing up! But, “Santa” still delivered stockings and a gift. We arrived home from New Zealand to see what Santa left under the tree.

Both girls were so surprised by their gifts. Legos are double the cost here in Shanghai, but I packed Eleri’s gift back this summer – hiding it in my closet. Emersyn has been asking for a NICE suitcase for the last three years. She does more travel on her own with school and she takes the pink suitcase from when she was little…and hates it. One of Jim’s co-workers brought the suitcase over with him from the States. I mailed it directly to his house from Amazon. She had no idea!

IMG_5331

Their stockings were filled with chocolate because it is a TRADITION, but the Christmas chocolates cost WAY too much here. It is one time a year, so I pay it! They both have a couple pair of earrings in their stockings. Eleri is still having problems with her ears so she isn’t wearing any earrings but her gold hoops, but someday she will be able to wear fun ones. The stocking has other small items like cords for their iproducts, luggage tags and fun pens (for Eleri).
