Permalink The girls were all dressed up for the Chinese New Year celebration at school. Emersyn wore a traditional Yunnan skirt. We purchased this skirt on our trip to Lijiang in 2009. Eleri had one, but she has long since outgrown it.

Eleri is wearing her Chinese New Year costume from a performance at Dulwich – the girls were sheep herders in the mountains of China. It still fit except we had to cut the elastic in the pant legs.

Eleri wearing her costume for her performance at the age of 4 – so cute. It was too big for her so we pinned the dress in the back. The costumes were made to fit each child so I always wondered if we had the wrong one.

Today was the last day of school to begin CNY break. In the morning, an all school assembly was held in the gym. The assembly was for the Spring Festival Celebration with a dragon dance and fire crackers – to bring good luck. The afternoon was for parties for the ES students. As room Mom, I organize the parties for food and craft. When I arrived at 2pm for the party, the children were reading. They find various reading corners in the class room. Eleri was reading with Zoe on the bean bags.
 Eleri & Zoe
So Yeon’s Mom sent in dumplings and Mason’s Mom sent in a traditional sticky, sweet rice treat. All the kids love dumplings so they disappeared very quickly. The sticky, sweet rice treat was new for many of the children. They all tired it and loved it.

I am much better at organizing the parties than finding the craft. I did the usual internet search (really not sure what we did before the internet) to find some Chinese New Year crafts. Since it is the year of the snake, I found an easy snake craft. Eleri and I cut and glued the snake bodies prior to the party. A pipe cleaner is used to be able to bend the snake around things. Each child cut out their own head and tongue to finish the snake.

The second craft was a charm. Each child added two chinese coins, a snake and a monkey or sheep based on the year the child was born. Children born in 2004 are monkeys and 2003 children are sheep. The students added a tassel to complete the charm. The most important part of the charm is the animals glow in the dark!

The third craft was a coloring of a snake as one never knows how long the children will spend making one item – sometimes too fast and other times too slow. The children colored the snakes while Tommy’s Mom, Angela, shared some Chinese traditions with the children.

Eleri with Ms Burns. Ms Burns is just delightful and the perfect teacher for Eleri.

Another fun party at school for the children.

Permalink This year for the first time, the 3rd and 4th graders did a group project for Economics. The children were assigned to groups to create a business group. Each group had to design a project to make and sell. The group presented their project to the “bankers” to receive a loan. After securing the loan, they could shop for supplies.
A group of Moms purchased every kind of making item you could possible think…pipe cleaners, google eyes, felt, clay, pom-poms and the list goes on. A shop was set up on Tuesday afternoons for the month of January. The students shopped for their supplies with the money from the bank. Eleri’s group decided to make “crazy pens”. They glued a pom-pom to the end with goggle eyes. Then, they wrapped pipe cleaners around the bodies. Personally, I think the pipe cleaners were the finishing touch. Eleri’s teacher, Ms Burns, had said they added two pipe cleaners to each pen when they realized it was a cheap item. Eleri’s group borrowed 112rmb from the bank.

The first sale day was to the 3rd & 4th graders. I forgot to send money with Eleri, but I saved my error by sending Jim with money at lunch time. I guess it does pay off to have him working in Jinqiao! On the fist sell day, they made 220rmb, selling 22 pens for 10rmb each. They had made enough money to pay their loan back and buy more supplies. The second sell day was to the kindergartens, 1st and 2nd graders. The final sell day was to the HS/MS during lunch time. I stopped by for the final sale day. When I arrived, Eleri’s group had five pens left. I purchased the orange one above.
 Eleri & Lulu

Eleri had fun with this project. The money the students earned goes to charity. Eleri business group earned 646rmb ($104) they donated to Heart to Heart. Each business group picked which charity to give their funds. Eleri’s business group was the highest money makers for Heart to Heart.

Permalink Concordia hosted an annual conference of Model United Nations (MUN) from Thursday, Jan 17 through Saturday, Jan 19. This was the fourth conference at Concordia with over 300 visiting students from 25 schools. Emersyn was not participating in this conference, but helping as an administrative person.
Model UN is an academic activity in which students simulate the work of the real United Nations in order to learn about current affairs. Students serve as ambassadors of assigned countries in specific UN committees, and work together in a formal setting to craft strategies for solving some of the social and political issues confronting the international community. Model UN conferences are hosted by schools around the world and the program is a wonderful vehicle for helping students to become active global citizens.
Emersyn dressed in her MUN attire looking very professional.

Emersyn had said the 4-day conference was a lot of work, but she learned watching the students. She will debate in Beijing in February after Chinese New Year. Emersyn will represent the UK debating human organ trafficking.

Permalink As a 7th grader, Emersyn has a few classes she fills with electives of her choice. She must do music (band, strings or choir) and an art/drama one semester which leaves one semester for a class of anything she desires. She is in the band playing the saxophone which is both semesters. Emersyn chose Awesome Acting for her drama to take place the second semester. For her “free choice” she picked Mr. Umphenour’s leadership class. Mr. Umphenour leads the dive trip Emersyn and Jim did in the summer to Thailand. This is a class of learning to be a leader in emergency situations. Emersyn loved the class proving she has her Dad’s quick responses to any situation.
The final activity of the class was a weekend exercise at Concordia. The group will be carrying all their gear as if they were out in the “real mountains”. Jim and Emersyn did a little REI shopping over the holidays for a sleeping bag and camping pad. I had a backpack from Decathlon that was the right size for her. Jim was still in the USA which left Emersyn and I to pack her backpack. We took as little as possible, but enough to keep her warm – we hoped! By the time we stuffed the sleeping bag in the pack, there wasn’t much room. For food for the weekend, Emersyn had camping freeze dried food from REI to cook over a fire. I had sent her with chicken, nuts and protein bars for a back-up (good idea, Mom).

The activity ran from Friday night at 9pm to Sunday morning at 10am. The MS Activity Night was this Friday night, therefore, the start time was moved back to 9pm. She looked refreshed and pretty for activity night.

The group would be sleeping outside the first night on the roof of the middle school. It is winter in Shanghai which means cold and wet. Night time temperatures have been -2c/27f all week with rain. The day time temperatures haven’t been much warmer as there has been very little sunshine in Shanghai. I kept thinking she is going freeze her “tush off”. Friday rolled around and the weather warmed up. When I checked the weather at 9pm, the temperature was 8c/45f – the warmest it has been since we arrived back – warmer than the days! The second night was planned for an inside sleep in the elementary school gym, which was good because it did rain hard Saturday night.
The report back from Emersyn was “two thumbs up”. Here is the detail of the trip from Emersyn. The weekend was about team building exercises. The students had to “climb a mountain, cross a snow field, make a signal tower for a helicopter, climbing a glacier and climbing across a frozen piece of land”. To “climb a mountain”, the students climbed 61 flights in the ES school. The ES school has 4 floors, therefore, coming down did not count. The ES school stairs were used because there are two sets of stairs at each end of the school. The HS has 6 floors, but only one set of stairs. The students climbed the 61 flights with their packs on and roped together for mountain climbing – until 2am. At one point in the exercise, they had to carry an “injured” person. There were five people on Emersyn’s team. At 2am, they pulled out their sleeping bags to sleep outside on the roof. Emersyn said she was warm sleeping in her new bag which is rated to 0f. We had packed her clothes for layers and she was fine.
To “crossed the snow field”, they used group skis to trudge around the field of the school 25 times. Emersyn’s group of four divied up into two groups of two. They used four person skis, but only had two people per ski. There were two other teams of five on a 5-person ski. Emersyn and her partner, Soe Jeong, went around the field ten times! Her team mates, Max and Jason, went around the field nine times. The other two teams of five only went around the field three times each. Adding up the total laps around the field, the combined groups did a total of twenty-five laps – just enough to “cross the snow field”.
Next, Emersyn’s group plus two other groups had to “climber a glacier.” The groups used the school’s rock climbing wall. Three people had to make it to the top for the group to pass. For all the students particiating, seven people “climbed the glacier”, including Emersyn. Emersyn really enjoyed climbing the rock wall, but said she enjoys climbing natural rock formations more like we do in Yangshou at Thanksgiving. After the group “climbed over the glacier”, they had to cross over a “frozen piece of land” which was bouldering from point A to point B. Again, this took place at Concordia’s rock climbing wall. One person, in a group of three, would start off and boulder until they fell off. When the first person fell off, the second person of their group took their place. The same process happened for the third person. If by the third person no one made it across, another group would take their place. They had to have three groups cross the “frozen piece of land” to pass this test. In the end, three groups passed the “frozen piece of land” with Emersyn’s group being one of them.
The ultimate test for everyone on the leadership weekend was building a signal tower as one whole group. It was 5pm and they had until 7:30pm to build a signal tower because the “helicopter” couldn’t reach them past 7:30pm. The hard part of this test was it had to be six feet tall, be made out of paperclips and straws and hold a laser for five minutes. In the beginning, no one could agree on what or how to build the tower. Everyone had their own idea they thought was flawless. After a couple minutes of arguing, the group gathered in a big circle. They squabbled for about three more minutes until suddenly they broke away as they had agreed on an idea. They divided into three groups, one group to make stabilizers, one group to build the boxes that would make up the structure and one group to put everything together. Emersyn wasn’t assigned to a group, instead she was a supervisor. She went around from group to group and asked how everyone was doing. She kept everyone on task and helped when there was a problem. There were a couple other supervisors, but they were all in the eighth grade. Emersyn was the only seventh grader who was a supervisor. About 45 minutes from their deadline they had a major problem – they needed to move the structure to the middle of the gym. Currently, it was in the corner of the gym. Everybody carefully picked up the structure and moved it to the middle onto a yoga mat hoping it would give them another centimeter of height. Quickly, they re-build the tower, but encountered another problem – the tower was leaning to the left too much. They devised a plan to hang groups of straws bundled together on the side of the tower. When they thought it was ready, they had Mr. Umphenour come over and place the laser on the tower. It held for two minutes before falling. Everyone rushed to save the tower before it totally collapsed. They managed to save the tower before too much damage had been done. Quickly, they assigned a group to make weights for the tower as the cause of the fall was from the tower leaning too far to the left. Seventeen minutes from the deadline, Mr. Umphenour came over again to see if the signal tower would hold the laser for 5 minutes. There was one person on the mat, which to Emersyn was incredibly stupid, considering one accidental move and the whole tower would move and fall. For the five minutes of wait, everyone held their breath. No one talked, but if they did, they we’re hushed by the majority of the group. No one moved except for one girl who danced in the corner from anticipation. Finally, the five minutes were up and the tower had passed it’s first test! The next test was to see if it was taller than Mr. Umphenour. It was by an inch. Everyone was so happy! If they had failed this test, they would have had to carry two people on stretchers up the 61 flights of stairs, “the mountain”, they climbed to reach their victims to get back to “town”. Instead, the students only had to carry one person and Rufus, the dummy, up five flights of stairs each.
Lara was the victim that would be carried up and down by the two teams. There were only two teams for this exercise, a red team and a blue team. The plan was simple, they would carry Lara up the stairs, then across the fourth floor hallway and hand Lara off to the other team to take her down. They carefully went up and down without a complaint. One time they had to stop because they we’re taking her down head first which could have caused her to go into “shock”. After they handed off their victim, Lara, they would retreat to their side of the floor, lie down and almost fall asleep. Everyone was tire though it was only 10:30pm. Everyone did their five flights without a complaint, whine or whimper. Everyone understood their position and task and completed it without words. After Lara’s turn was finished, they used the dummy, Rufus. Even though Rufus was the other victim he was handled with much less care, considering he wasn’t alive and it was 11:30pm. Finally the students finished.
The teams headed back downstairs for their final demonstration. The students were suppose to use Rufus as a victim who had a heart attack. The device did everything a regular device would do except actually shocking the person. The only problem was the batteries were corroded. Smiling inside everyone set up their sleeping bags and fell asleep. The next morning people who wanted to make fire would go up to the roof to make fire. Emersyn had gathered kindled from the garden. The palm trees provided the best kindle. Mr. Nie hand sawed some wood planks for Emersyn as we have no idea where to get wood here in Shanghai. They had two problems: a) the door was locked to the roof top of the middle school building, b) it was rained and no one had any dry wood as it was left on the roof overnight. With that set back, they all ate cold meals. Emersyn had nothing left as she was preparing to make fire. She asked her friends who had food and they gladly shared. then, it was time for the de-breifing. They gathered around and shared their thoughts on the trip. In another hour, it was time to go home. Emersyn was exhausted on Sunday, but loved it.
Emersyn is choosing to do the optional “real world” trip to the mountains in Kunming in March. The Concordia International School Hanoi (CISH) will join Concordia International School Shanghai (CISS) on this trip. They will have to navigate with compasses (not GPS) to three different camp sites. The teachers are there to keep the students safe, but not help. If they can’t find camp, they won’t have tents for the night or food. It should be a great experience. I am pleased that Emersyn takes advantages of these learning opportunities.

Permalink We had many discussions about going to Tahoe this year. With the attic project, we seemed to be running out of time very fast. It was decided to not go to the snow…but, I wasn’t sure I was happy with that decision. Therefore, a bit more discussions and we decided to squeeze in Tahoe and make the most of it. The plan was to leave on Monday morning. I was out doing our Shanghai buying when Jim called to say he and Emersyn decided we are leaving tonight. We threw things in the car and left an hour later. The drive was fast on a Sunday evening.
We arrived at the house at 11:00pm. The girls grabbed the sleds and started sledding down the stairs. They only took time to find gloves after their hands were too cold. They had a blast sledding while we unpacked the car.

Eleri was eating the fresh snow!

After midnight, I called the girls in from the fun. Eleri still needed to find ski gear for the next day. Since we packed in less than an hour, I just threw the ski gear that I thought might fit in the bag. Now, we had to determine what actually fit. Of course, the pair she wore two years ago no longer fit. She wore this pair one day and then Emersyn broke her leg and we drove home. Good thing Jennifer gave me a pair of Sophie’s old ski pants as they fit perfectly. An old ski jacket of Emersyn’s was another perfect fit. We checked the closet for the ski helmets to find the one she wore last time – the head is not growing as fast these days. She was set to go off with Dad the next morning!
Monday morning, Jim was up early as he wanted to be at the slopes at 8am. They needed to rent ski equipment and it is best to get there before the crowds. I helped Eleri get all geared up.

Jim and Eleri had a great day skiing. The weather was in the 30’s with the sun shinning. Eleri skied all day until around 3pm. At that time, Jim feed her a hot dog and a hot chocolate.

Emersyn was not skiing since she had surgery this past summer. Terri, Grandma, Grandpa, Emersyn and I went to Tahoe City to do a little shopping. We decided to take Grandma & Grandpa to the Nevada border to do a little gambling. We shopped in new places along the way which was fun.
We had dinner at home followed by smores! The girls love roasting everyone’s marshmallow.

It was New Year’s Eve, but only the girls, Terri and I stayed up to watch the ball drop.
Tuesday morning and New Year’s Day. Eleri did not want to ski as she wanted to play in the snow. Jim had made the sled run down the side of the house last night. Jim took off to ski by himself. He hasn’t had a full day of black ski runs since Emersyn was born twelve years ago. In addition, he reported the slopes were empty. He skied down the run and was able to get on the lift with no lines. He skied until 3pm at which time he was exhausted.
Eleri was ready to go out to the snow by 10am. She put on her gear and grabbed the sled to hit the snow. She did not want to wait for Emersyn. Emersyn had to find ski gear, yet. Of course, Emersyn’s pants did not fit. So I gave her mine. My pants probably don’t fit anyway as they are over 10 years old…I have put on a few pounds in the past 10 years. About the time we had Emersyn dressed, Eleri popped back in. She had snow down her back. I button up her ski jacket the proper way to keep the snow out and she skipped back out the door. Terri went out to play with the girls while Grandma and I cleaned the house.

The girls came in around 2pm for lunch. After feeding the girls, we packed the car. By the time Jim arrived at the house, we were about ready to drive down the mountain. We did hit terrible traffic coming out of Tahoe City all the way down the mountain. It took us 3 hours to go what is normally 1.5 hours. We arrived at Auburn to grab In & Out dinner and for Jim to get on a conference call.
It was a quick trip, but everyone was glad we went to play in the snow.

Permalink One of the projects over this break was cleaning the attic. Jim and I swept through the attic to get rid of everything that was no longer needed. The train was pulled out to give to Dylan, Giselle’s son, but Eleri wasn’t ready to give it away…yet. I said she could keep the train until the end of the summer and then it is time to give the train a new home. The girls love this train, but I can’t say the same about the parents. The train is a bit loud and has a horn. I did feel a bit bad that the train hasn’t been down for a couple years so she missed some prime time riding! With Terri and Andy’s stuff in the house for the past two years, it has been too crowded for the train.

Permalink Christmas morning – the anticipation of waiting for Santa. The girls were up early at 6am. They had fun waking everyone up for Christmas morning presents. The girls running down the stairs is my favorite part. I love the expressions on their faces.

Santa filled their stockings with underwear and tights (always needed), a new camelbak water bottle, a nail kit, a hand bag, jewelry, book markers, the new apple ear buds and chocolate, of course. The stockings were lying on top of a pile of books. Eleri had asked Santa for the Spa kit for Christmas and Emersyn wanted the Rush Hour game. Eleri’s letter to Santa was really cute giving Santa the number he could call to order the Spa kit if he didn’t have one. Eleri also found 10 little rubber ducks in her stocking from Santa. She has a rubber duck collection she plays with in the bath tub. Maybe they have been good all year!!

Empty stockings!

Emersyn gift from us was a kindle, a reading tablet. A new kindle (Paper white) was released this year that was just for reading – no bells and whistles, no games – just reading. It is almost half the price of the old kindle (Fire). Since she reads all the time, Emersyn wanted a light reading tablet to take to school. She has her ipad, but now that she is a 7th grader with a required lap top, her bag is heavy. This was perfect for her needs. Also, if she was going to lose or damage the reader, I much prefer it was the cheaper kindle.
Eleri had no idea what she wanted for Christmas from us so we gave her a very nice art set with markers, colored pencils and water colors. We added a sketch pad and some books on drawing.

The last item was a big mystery and it was heavy so they had no idea what was in the box. We gave both the girls an ezy roller. Bindi, Lili’s Mom, had said they were getting a pink one for Lili. Bindi’s girls had rode them at a friend’s house in Singapore and loved them. I did a little research on the ezy roller to descover it has received many toy awards for several years. We debated about getting Emersyn one as she is becoming a teen! However, we knew the girls would have fun riding them together in the Gardens.

The sun was up by the time we finished opening gifts. We put the ezy rollers together for the girls to ride around the kitchen. The fun of Christmas morning is playing with all the new items.
We showered and dressed for brunch at Nancy and Ernie’s. Both girls put on their new clothes from Christmas, including their new tights (however, Jim did not take a full length photo).

We went to Nancy’s to enjoy the delicious brunch she puts together every year. My favorite food at brunch is the french toast while the girls love Nancy’s bacon. Christmas spent with family – always so blessed to share the time together.

Permalink Christmas eve and the tree was decorated and full of presents BEFORE Santa even arrived.

The nutcrackers are on displayed on the fireplace to add to the festive decorations. Terri and Andy buy the girls a nutcracker every year so the collection continues to grow.

We took a few Christmas eve photos before dinner. Once everyone sits down to dinner, it is hard to get everyone in a photo.

We enjoyed a Christmas eve dinner with Mimi, Papa, Grandma, Grandpa and Terri. We had soup with appetizers. The most important appetizer is the brie cheese. Brie cheese is very expensive in Shanghai. Both of the girls love it so it is a nice treat.

Eleri drew the photo of Santa. Emersyn wrote the note. Notice they have been VERY good!

Permalink Mimi and Papa treated Jim and the girls to a performance of “A Christmas Carol” in San Jose. They enjoyed a lovely lunch at Jonny Rockets downtown.

The plan was to walk through Christmas in the Park before the performance. It has been awhile since the last time we took the girls to Christmas in the Park. However, all good plans sometimes get rained upon. It was pouring rain this day – so the group did a quick walk by Christmas in the Park.

It was a fun outing spent with Mimi and Papa – a downpour of raining didn’t “rain on their parade”.

Permalink The girls LOVE to make Gingerbread houses with Aunt Nancy. I asked Emersyn what was her favorite Christmas tradition – her quick response was Gingerbread houses with Nancy.
Nancy makes the houses from scratch. She sets out all the different bowls of candy to enjoy for making and eating! I eat the hot-tomales, but Eleri was putting them on her house so I couldn’t eat them all!

This year, the girls shared the fun with Chloe, Giselle’s daughter. Chloe is 4 – already!

Nancy has the job of “frosting squeezer” as it takes talent to get the frosting out.

Emersyn is getting older enough that she can frost her own house.

The finished masterpiece Gingerbread houses…

It is a fun tradition and we are so thrilled Nancy shares her time and talents with us every year!
