I love Emersyn’s writing. She loves to read and it reflects in her writing assignments. This assignment was due before we left for the Christmas break.

A Christmas Story by Emersyn Lyon

“Dude! This Christmas is going to be so awesome!” Ty exclaimed as he and Dylan were skateboarding down the hill to the park, his tanned cheeks rosy from the wind, his reddish blond hair bouncing. “We get to make gingerbread houses and-” Dylan shot him a look. “We get to eat all the candy we want! I can’t wait to get my hands on the Hot Tomales!”

“Whatever.” Dylan replied. Dylan had dark brown hair cut just above his eye. He has dark chocolate eyes; you can barely see the pupils.

“What is it with you and Christmas?” Ty asked.

Dylan shrugged. “I don’t know. The whole Santa Claus traveling around the world. Christmas carolers everywhere. Everybody always has smiles plastered on their faces. It freaks me out. Plus, I have to spend the entire day with all of my family relatives. You have no idea what Aunt Suzy’s mole looks like!” He shuddered.

“Yea, well, just don’t spoil it for Allie.”

“Easy for you to say. You don’t live with her during Christmas.”

“She’s adorable!”

“Can we just forget about this conversation? Please?” At the park they bought ice cream and skated down Luther Road. By the time they got back to Dylan’s house it was 5:00.

“I better get home, ” Ty told Dylan, “See ya tomorrow.”

“Bye, ” Dylan replied. Dylan walked up to the door. It was 3 weeks before Christmas and his family already had lights all over the house. “Oh great, ” He muttered. He opened the door.

“Dylan, Dylan, Dylan!” Allie squealed. Her curly dirty blond hair bouncing up and down. “Guess what!”
“What?” Dylan said with a bored tone.

“Tomorrow Mrs. Nancy is giving my class hot chocolate and we get to make Christmas cards.”

“No way!” Dylan said in a sarcastic tone.

“What’s wrong?” Allie asked.

“Nothing, and why would you care?” Dylan replied.

“Your my brother and-” Dylan was already down the hall and slammed the door in his room. “Humph. He never wants to spend any time with me.” Allie muttered.

Dylan saw Ty at school and they skateboarded home. “So … how’s your Christmas coming?” Dylan asked Ty just to start a conversation.

“Great! I made a gingerbread house and it is amazing! It has candy and frosting all over. When Christmas is over I think I’m going to have to eat it.” Ty reported.

“Gross!” Dylan replied. “It’s going to be, like, a week and a half old!”

“It’s so tempting though!” Ty explained.

“Whatever, ” Dylan said. “But if you get sick, remember, I warned you.”

“Hate to break it to you, but I do not get sick.” Ty retorted.

“Really?” Dylan said in a sarcastic tone. “What about that time at camp, and that time at my house, and that time in second grade, and the time-”

“Okay, Okay! Except for those times then I never get sick.” Ty said.

“I’ve got to go.” Dylan said. He and Ty parted ways and Dylan skated boarded up to his porch. When he opened the door he was greeted by a squealing Allie.

“DYLAN! Do you want to help us decorate the tree! Daddy says I get to put the Angel on top because I’m his little angel!” she gave a little giggle.

“Um…no!” He replied

“Why not? You used to love Christmas with us.” Allie asked

“Well, I’ve grown up now and you should too!” Dylan almost yelled.

“Why are you so mean now?!” Allie cried. Then she ran off crying.
“Whatever, ” Dylan muttered, but in his heart there was a pang of guilt.

“Allie hurry up or I’m going to leave you!” Dylan threatened.

“I’m coming, I’m coming.” Allie replied happily. It was three days till Christmas and Dylan hated it. “I’m ready, ” Allie said as she came down the stairs. She was wearing a knitted red hat with a fluffy green pom-pom on top with identical mittens. She wore a red dress with brown leggings and had a huge smile on her face.

“The bus is going to leave, ” Dylan said again.

“I’m right here, ” Allie said. She grabbed her back pack and headed toward the door. Out side it was snowing lightly and over night the a few new layer of show covered the ground. “Don’t you just love the snow everywhere?” Allie asked as she caught snowflakes on her tong.

“Yea, beautiful, gorgeous, now lets go.” Dylan said sarcastically. They waited till the light was green then they began to cross the road.

“Look!” Allie squealed.

“What?” Dylan was out of patience.

“Look at the dog across the road.” Allie told Dylan. Sure enough, there was a ginger colored dog the size of two milk jugs. “It’s so cute!” Allie squealed again.

Allie ran across the road to pet the dog. “Wait!” Dylan called. He ran after her.

Allie kneeled down in the snow and pet the dog. “He’s the color of ginger.” Allie informed Dylan.

“How beautiful, ” Dylan said in monotone. “Now, LET’S GET ON THE BUS!”

“I’m coming, I’m coming.” She replied. “Now you stay right here until I get back from school. Okay?” Allie told the dog. The dog barked once.

“Look!” Allie said on the way home. She pointed out the window to the ginger colored dog they saw this morning. The bus door opened and Allie hopped out. “You stayed here!” She said smiling from ear to ear.

“I’m going to the house, ” Dylan called.

“Okay, come on little puppy, ” Allie coaxed the dog.

“MOM! DAD! CAN YOU COME HERE?” She yelled. Her parents can and stood in the door way. “Well, I was wondering if we could adopt a dog.” Allie told them. She stepped aside to reveal the ginger colored dog.

“Oh, sweetie, ” Her mom said.

“It could be my Christmas and birthday present for forever. Please?” Allie asked.

Allie’s dad looked at her mom “It would teach them good responsibility.”

“Wait a minute, ” Dylan said, “as in ‘them’ do you mean Allie and me? That is not going to happen. She wants the dog, not me.” Dylan pointed at Allie.

“Please Dylan.” Allie said giving him her best puppy dog face. “Please, please, please with a cheery on top with sprinkles and ice cream and-”

“No.” Dylan said flatly interrupting Allie. “No, I will not be responsible for that dog. I don’t even want a dog. I have a life and I don’t want it ruined by a stupid dog!” Dylan’s voice rising until he was almost yelling. “No!”

Allie’s lower lip trembled, “But-”

“No! End of conversation, thank you.” Dylan said then turned and walked away.

“Mommy, Daddy, please.” Allie asked again almost in tears. She hugged the dog and he whimpered. “Please, ”

“Sorry Angel, ” Allie’s Dad said. “You and your brother have to be the ones taking care of it. Not me and your mother.”

“Mom?” Allie asked weakly.

“I’m sorry, ” She said gently, “but the answer is no.”

Then Allie burst into tears.

“I HATE YOU!” Allie screamed at Dylan later that night. “YOU ARE A COLD HEARTED, GOOD FOR NOTHING, TERRIBLE BROTHER! I HATE YOU!” Allie screamed again.

“Is this all because of that stupid dog?” Dylan asked, his tone bored.

“THAT DOG IS NOT STUPID! YOU ARE!” Allie yelled.

“No, I’m not stupid.” Dylan said flatly, “That dog is stupid and you are being stupid. It’s just a dog. Grow up.”

“I HATE YOU! I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU! YOU DON’T EVEN CARE ABOUT ME ANYMORE! I MIGHT AS WELL BE A GERM! I’M INVISIBLE TO YOU!” Allie screamed. She turned around and stomped out, slamming the door.

“Ahhhh, ” Dylan said as he woke up. Today was December 25. They had the day off from school and he planned on staying in his room all day. “I hate Christmas, ” He muttered.

The day went by as a blur. He opened presents, played in the snow (against his will), played with Allie (again, against his will), etc. The finally it was night time. Christmas was almost over. It was dinner time and he had to sit next to Aunt Suzy. Her mole was the size of a button! All Dylan could think about was going to be and have this day be over-

“Look!” Allie screamed and Dylan’s thoughts were interrupted. “It’s Ginger!”

“Who?” Dylan asked.

“The dog that you hate, ” Allie replied menacingly. Allie scooted back in her chair and made a beeline for the door.

“Wait, ” Her mom called, but Allie had already flung the door open and was walking down the porch steps, careful not to slip.
Dylan, his Dad and Mom all rushed to the stair, but it’s too late. Suddenly, a car comes speeding around the corner. Allie is already running across the road to reach Ginger. The dog starts running toward Allie. She slipped on the ice. “Ruff! Ruff!”

“AAAAAHHHHH!” Allie screams. The car keeps going. Allie lies in the middle of the road, Ginger barking crazily at the car. Ginger runs over to where Allie lays. The car swerves to the other lane and everything is quiet again.

“Allie!” Her Mom cries running across the street to her. Dylan stands there, frozen. The scene plays over and over in his head. “Dylan, call 911, right now.” Her voice was stern. Dylan didn’t move. “DYLAN!” His Mom barked. Dylan ran up the steps and into the house and called 911.

“Uuuuuhhhh, ” Allie moaned. She opened her eyes. Everything was a little blurry, but she could make out the shapes of her family. “Mom? Dad? Dylan?” She asked.

“We’re right here sweetie, ” her mom said, “How are you feeling?”

“My head hurts, a lot, ” Allie replied.

“Where’s Dylan?” Allie asked.

“I’m right here, ” Dylan replied. He was standing in the corner of the room. “I’m sorry, Allie.”

“For what?” Allie asked.

“For being a mean brother, ” he replied.

“I forgive you, ” Allie said.

“Before I forget, ” Dylan said, “I have a little Christmas present for you.” Dylan whistled then opened the door.

The ginger colored dog ran in and put his front paws on Allie’s hospital bed. “Hi, Ginger!” She said.

“Do you think this would make up for me being a bad brother and your Christmas present?” Dylan asked.

“Perfect, ” Allie replied.

Eleri’s Christmas concert began at 6:30pm. This year for the first time the concert included grades k-4…that only means one thing – a long concert. I picked the girls up from school. We went to The Dragonfly to get our nails done before a quick dinner. After dinner and a change of clothes for Eleri, we were off to school by 6:15pm. Jim is missing the concert due to a work dinner obligation.

We took are assigned seats by teachers way in the corner. When it was Eleri’s turn to perform, we couldn’t see her at all. Luckily, Jennifer’s assign seat was much better and she sent me these photos of Eleri. Eleri had a big smile on her face when the class finished their song.

After the concert, I wanted to get a few photos of Eleri as I knew I didn’t have any from the performance. She was having fun with her friends.

The annual Children’s Christmas Party with the expat association, SEA (Shanghai Expat Association) is full of crafts and fun for the kids. Emersyn said no to going this year. Therefore, Jennifer and I took Eleri and Sophie – they still love to make “stuff”.

The event is held at the Four Seasons Hotel. We took a few photos of the girls in front of the Hotel’s Christmas tree.

The Children’s party includes lunch of children’s food – chicken fingers, french fries and pasta! The adults do leave a bit hungry. Sophie and Eleri had fun at the various craft stations. There were stations for bead making, puppet making, ornament making and face painting. The girls made them all. In addition, each child leaves with a small gift from Santa.

Every child receives a kit to make a gingerbread house. We have learned from experience to take the kit home. When we got home, Sophie came up to make houses together. Emersyn was ready to help.

There is always the joy of eating the frosting and candy.

The kits don’t even compare to Aunt Nancy’s homemade houses. Everyone miss the fun of making with Nancy. I missed my hot tamales Nancy ALWAYS has for me to eat – more go in my tummy than on the houses!!

Emersyn had her first band concert of the year. She dressed in her band concert attire of black pants and a white shirt. She looked very nice.

Eleri dressed in a Christmas dress for the performance.

The 6th grade band played four songs:

Ding Dong Merry On High
The Merry Christmas Machine
Vier Deutche Weihnachtslieder
Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer

Wow, what a difference a year makes. The children are now in their second year of band and you can hear the difference. We really couldn’t see our saxophone player until she stood up, but we enjoyed hearing the band.

Jim didn’t make the concert. He had planned his flight back from Beijing to arrive in Shanghai to attend the concert. His flight was delayed – TIC!

Eleri had an assignment to make a musical instrument. Since she is the expert maker, she knew exactly what she wanted to do. She started with a kleenex box. After she painted all the corners brown, she was ready to put her idea together with a little help from Jim. They plugged in the glue gun and went to work assembling it as Eleri had drawn her design.

The final product – a guitar.

Eleri was very pleased with her guitar. We talked about it reflect the time and effort she put into her project.

We bring back our US food stash in boxes. Boxes weigh less than a suitcase – weight is very valuable, Eleri’s first comment, ” I want the boxes to make something”. She spend the weekend making a tunnel. She taped the boxes together. When she finished the tunnel, she added a name tag, a door and a lock. She grabbed her reading light to give her tunnel light.

After about a month of the tunnel, she was ready to redesign her boxes. She made a boat.

Now, she sits in her boat to watch tv.

I think this will be the last redesign of these boxes – they will be ready for the rubbish bin!

This year, we are spending Christmas in Australia. We promised the girls they could open presents before we left. Jim has uncertain travel expectations to India, therefore, we opened our presents extra early.

Sine the girls and I went home for Halloween, family sent us back with Christmas gifts in October. Our little tree was filled with presents.

The girls were excited to open their presents even if it wasn’t Christmas morning. We had talked about opening one present and the rest when we returned, but it is more fun to open them ALL.

Emersyn started with the biggest in size present. This was a lap desk from us. Eleri received one, also. Now, they can sit on the sofa drawing or writing.

Aunt Terri and Uncle gave Eleri a rip stick. Now, she can ride around the complex with Emersyn in the Spring.

Grandma and Grandpa gave the girls cozy blankets. They will enjoy curling up in them for weekend movie nights.

Grandma and Grandpa also gave Eleri a craft item – pop tabs making. She loves her crafts. Emersyn got the book she picked out from Grandma and Grandpa.

Mimi and Papa gave Emersyn more books, at her request. There is a reason my bookshelves are over flowing! Eleri received a Shrinky Dink Fairy Garden from Mimi and Papa. She loves the Shrinky Dinks – a good fun craft from the past.

The girls opened a combined gift together. It was paints and pens for shirts – always a favorite.

After all the presents were open as there was more than just the photos above, of course. It was on to the last big gift of the season from Mom and Dad. Emersyn had asked for a Kindle for Christmas. She didn’t think she was getting it. She had said she understood if she didn’t get the kindle as it is expensive and she would be happy with anything. Well, that anything was her own ipad. We thought spending a bit more for an ipad made more sense than a kindle. Now, she could read books, play games and watch movies on the long flights. She was thrilled! Eleri got her own ipad at 7 years old! If it wasn’t a lifesaver for me on the long flights in coach, I can’t think of why a 7 year old when need an ipad. I guess if United was a better airline and had children movies, I wouldn’t need a “lifesaver”!

Dad was busy helping them get their ipads set-up. The next task would be getting them loaded for our long flight to Australia.

It was a nice, quiet evening opening presents. It is always fun to see their expressions and excitement. Of course, not the same as Christmas morning when they come running down the stairs. However, they can still look forward to Santa’s gifts.

We have started this tradition of a Thanksgiving Adventure Trip to Yangshuo. This is our 4th Thanksgiving in Yangshuo. Five families are sharing the adventure. It is the usual gang of past Thanksgivings to include the Jenkins (Jennifer, Scott, Sean & Sophie), the Bishops (Faith, Dan, Avery & Riley) and the Brennans (Judy, Dan, Danielle & Erin). This year a new family joined us – the Pascoes (Lori, Craig, Alyssa & Logan). We have 20 people in total with 10 kids and 10 adults.

Thursday, Day One Adventure – We left Shanghai at 7:40am to arrive in Guilin at 10:20am – on time! We gathered our luggage and piled into the bus. It takes about an hour to drive to Yangshuo. Yangshuo County is home to several ethnic minority groups of Zhuang, Yao, Dong and Miao.

Upon arriving at the Mountain Retreat, all the Moms were yelling, “put on your water shoes” as the kids were running for the river. It was a beautiful day with temperatures in the high 70’s. The kids couldn’t wait to play in the river. They all found bamboo sticks and ran down to the bank that crosses the Yangshuo Dragon River.

Sean was the first to jump into the river for a swim. This is the first time the weather has been warm enough for a swim.

The Parents take a seat at the tables by the river to watch the “entertainment” while enjoying a cold drink or ginger tea.

After our long lunch, it was time to begin the bamboo raft adventure at 2:30pm. We piled into the vans to drive up river to the starting point. I knew we would have a pair-off issue with the kids once we reached the river. Therefore, I asked at the hotel if we could put three kids on one raft. The answer was yes. Of course, once we got to the river, the guides did not want the three little ones of Sophie, Riley and Eleri to go alone. We said they were fine. The rafts have a seat for two people. The three little ones fit better on the raft than the older gang of three which included Danielle, Alyssa and Erin. Sean went with Logan this year – a boy for the first time! Emersyn went on a raft with Avery. She was excited to share the adventure with Avery as they have not been together in past years. This year, we needed 8 rafts for this crew. The rafts cost 150rmb ($24) per raft.

Starting out and still DRY!

We bought all the kids water guns. The temperature is warm and they can get wet without being cold. They were ready to attack!

Game ON!

The kids have so much fun going down the river. For them, it is about the water fight and the adventure. For the adults, it is the relaxing view down the river. I went with Scott, who is a big kid. Therefore, we found ourselves in the middle of a few water fights, also. I used Scott as a shield so he ended up wet. Beers and sodas are sold on floating rafts for a premium. Scott and I did notice the cords to plug in the coolers on the rafts were just ran through the water – regular cords!. The view was beautiful along the river.

Half way down the river and WET!

Up and over the various dams to get down river.

We have the rafts pull over early to get off at the Mountain Retreat. It was 4pm when we pulled to shore. Since the weather is so beautiful, the kids were not cold from being wet. They were the most wet this year (except for Eleri since she fell in last year). They ran down to the river instead of to the showers!

The parents took up the usual spot at the tables by the river – an after raft drink.

We had Thanksgiving dinner at 7pm. The staff set up the private dinning area for our gang to enjoy our feast. Judy brought brie cheese and Wheat Thins crackers to share as an appetizers. You know you are good friends when the US food stash is shared. We enjoyed a delicious meal of turkey, beans, potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin cheesecake. The stuffing tasted more like croutons, but no complaints for a turkey dinner prepared in China. We all brought wine to compliment our dinner for a lovely evening shared with friends.

Sophie & Emersyn

After dinner, the gang of kids were busy playing hiding and seek in the dark. They all have one rule after dark, no one is allowed down by the river. No one needed gloves or hats this year for after dark play.

Friday, Day Two Adventure – The morning started off with breakfast and relaxing by the river. We had a slow morning as our adventure for the day began at 10:30am.

The Dads and kids were going on a bike ride while the Moms went shopping. The Moms were off to explore a new village, Fuli and then to the village of last year, Xing Ping. We took a mortorized bamboo raft to Fuli down the Li River. The raft cost us 150rmb ($24) for our trip to Fuli. It was nice and relaxing…no water fights and dams to go over.

It appears the local use the Li River as transportation. The scenic route…and relaxing!

The karst formations of the area were formed from gradual retreat of inland seas. There are over 700 karst in this area.

We floated by the Liu Sanjie Show stadium. It was different than I expected from the river view in the day.

We walked the small village to the fan factory. Fans were outside drying in the morning sun.

We didn’t buy much. I picked up some slippers for 40rmb ($6). The slippers are knitted on recycle tire as the soles. The ladies are knitted them as you walk down the lanes. I need some slippers in California. Our fixer-upper plywood floors are bit on the dirty side. All the ladies bought the small oranges. They are delicious and cheap. For 10rmb ($1.50), a bag full of oranges. The lady weights them with an old scale…it is somewhat accurate.

After Fuli, we took a van to Xing Ping. It was quiet and quaint as we remembered from last year. No one bought much, but we enjoyed the slow village. We took the van back to the Mt. Retreat.

The Dads were on kid duty – 5 Dads and 10 kids! They gathered their bikes and took off for their adventure about the same time the Moms left for their shopping adventure. The bike adventure was a ride to the Dragon bridge.

To get to the other side of the river, the bikes are walked across the rice dams.

After riding all morning, it was time to find a place to feed the kids. From what I have been told from the stories, it was a local place along side the road. The menu had chicken heads and from there it became a competition of who would eat a head!

The chicken head eaters were…

Emersyn

Sean

Danielle

Riley

They enjoyed the views of the local people and countryside on their ride.

The shoppers arrived back to the Mt. Retreat around 3pm hungry. The ladies have a favorite dish of spicy eggplant. We ordered up eggplant, beers and diet cokes for a quiet lunch by the river…there were no children. The Dads and kids were still out biking. The biker gang returned around 4pm with their adventure to tell. The kids still had more energy to run and play by the river.

There is a little old lady with no teeth selling these flowers outside the hotel. I had to help her by paying 7 rmb for one for Eleri. The asking price is 5rmb, but I gave her all my change.

Our dinner tonight was at Luna at the Village Guest House. The Guest House is a sister hotel to the Mt. Retreat. We had a delicious meal of more food than one person could possible eat. They seated the kids on one side and the adults on the other of the roof top restaurant. We preordered our food with this many people. We asked for the kids to be feed first so they could go back to the courtyard to play in the trees. With age, they are more independent. Eleri is the youngest at 7 with Danielle and Alyssa the oldest at 13.

The adults enjoyed the food, wine and friendship. After eating and drinking too much, our bill for the night was 580rmb ($91) per family. It was another fun evening at Luna’s.

Saturday, Day Three Adventure – Today was rock climbing with a group called China Climb. The cost is 225rmb ($34) per person for about 4 hours at the Rock. For the first time, we are doing a morning climb with a 9am pick-up.

We drove to the climbing rock which is called the “Wine Bottle” due to the rock formation nearby.

The path to the climbing rock.

“The Rock”

We had five ropes this year. Emersyn was one of the first climbers. We climbed this rock two years ago. Emersyn started with the easy rope. The “easy” rope has a “hump” that is difficult to get around.

Jim started with the hardest climb of the five ropes. He said it was tough as it was a challenge to find hand grips.

Eleri started wih the easy climb. She did not climb two years ago, therefore, this is her first time on this rock.

She didn’t give it much of an effort. This is how far off the ground she climb!!

I climbed one of the medium ropes. I only did one climb for the day as i enjoy watching the kids have fun. For the first time, I did fall off the rock – a bit scary hanging in the air. Once I got back to the rock, I was in a bad place to find foot holds. It took awhile to work myself over to a better spot to get back on the wall.

Emersyn began her second climb next to my rope – another medium climb.

I am almost to the top, but Emersyn’s rope is higher. She keeps working her way to the top.

Jim began his second climb as Emersyn was coming down.

Jim climbing to the top.

Eleri did not want to climb again today. I had a “talk” with her about it. I would be fine if she didn’t want to climb if she had a good reason, but her lack of effort was not acceptable. In addition, she is our little monkey.

Sure enough, she climbed half way up the rock in no time. She got to the second cave area and was ready to come down. This time she gave it some effort!

Sean was working on earning a boy scout badge. Our head guide, Edward, was a Boy Scout as a kid, also. He tied Sean into the base rock and then had him support Jim on his third climb.

We finished at the rock around 1:00pm. We were glad we did a morning climb because it was getting hot on the Rock in the afternoon sun. We went back for lunch on the river – our favorite place to hang! The kids ate fast as they were ready for river fun. They had ALL afternoon to play. They “borrowed” the hotel’s tire tubes that were sitting on the raft. The tubes had a rope to keep them from floating away.

The “Gang of Trouble” having fun.

Next, they “borrowed” the Hotel’s raft. A funny story from the parents’ view. Danielle and the boys were on the raft. All of sudden the boys jumped off as Danielle was heading for the drop. We all laughed. Then, we were all yelling at Danielle that she couldn’t take the raft down the shoot. The teenage mind was not thinking the next step – no way to get the raft back up. We did find out later why the boys bailed at the same time. Danielle had said she was going down and if they didn’t want to go with her to jump – so they did.

Danielle and Eleri on the borrowed raft.

All the girls on the “borrowed raft”.

The kids played outside until the sun began to disappear behind the karst. We had talked about an afternoon bike ride, but we were too busy enjoying the “entertainment” on the river. We joked we were holding the chairs down. The joke in “holding the chairs down” are these wood chairs weight a ton.

After 5pm, the kids went upstairs for showers. After showers, they enjoyed some downtime of watching a movie before dinner. We enjoyed a glass of wine on our deck before dinner.

Dinner was Chinese food for the group of 20. We ordered all kinds of different dishes to try. After dinner, it was smore time. I had brought all the smore needs. The kids had fun making and eating them.

Sunday, Day Three Adventure – Our last morning to enjoy the fun and beauty of Yangshuo. We had breakfast at the fireplace as we did every morning.

Our flight left Guilin on time – amazing to be on time both directions!! Another fun adventure shared with friends. We always say, “maybe this will be the last year”. But, then we get here to enjoy the activities and the beauty of Yangshuo. The children had more river fun due to the beautiful weather.

On Wednesday, it was a Thanksgiving feast for the 1-2 community (1st & 2nd Graders). Parents brought in a main, a side or a dessert. Since we missed signed up during conferences, I was assigned the last spot of a main. Ms Johnson gave me a list of all the mains parents had signed up to bring to the feast. I made mac & cheese – a kid favorite and it wasn’t on the list!

I was greeted by my adorable pilgrim when she came up from recess.

Eleri had her pilgrim hat, but she didn’t have time to finish her Indian hat. The class made the Indian hats while we were in America. She was happy to be a pilgrim.

Kennedy, Eleri & Anna

Eleri and I filled our plates with the Thanksgiving feast of spring rolls, mac & cheese, crackers, pizza, stuffing and other tasty foods.

We completed our feast with a ginger cookie and poppy seed bread for dessert – yum!
