I flew to India for a business meeting. It seems all flights arrive into and leave between 12:30am and 2:00am. Not sure why, but it raises hell on ones sleep.

I flew into Mumbai then I had a four hour drive to Pune. The meeting lasted two hours then another four hour drive back.

I have seen many things in my travels, but I did not expect to see a guy riding a camel down the street in Pune. A little further on was a guy on an elephant. Next, I expected to see Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus tents.

Traffic in India makes the chaos on China look like a calm summers day. The India infrastructure is woefully inadequate. Traffic signals are routinely ignored, cars and people are crossing every which way. Don’t forget the massive holes on the side of the road where sewer lines are going in. This is in contrast to beautiful LEED certified office complexes behind the gated entrances. What a difference between public and private sector!

I am writing this while in a traffic jam to the litany of horns in Mumbai. Earlier in the day on the way back from Pune, we hit a jam on the express way. Our driver flipped a U turn, drove the wrong way on the expressway to then cross over to take the old road. It is so reassuring to see heavily loaded trucks bearing down on you as you make your way the wrong way.

I have to say I love the black and yellow auto ricksaws everywhere. Just like the tuk-tuks of Bangkok, they are a mainstay of India public transit. The lorries are also great with their brightly color painted cabs and cargo boxes. It seems the drivers take real pride in thier artwork.
