It’s another blog moment. While waiting at bus pick-up this afternoon, I was “visiting†with Helen’s grandmother. Visiting would be a strong word for our conversations. She speaks no English…I speak very little Chinese, so we use lots of sign language. As you can see, I do not even know her name, so I refer to her as Helen’s grandmother. She is 70 years old and a very sweet lady. Helen rides on the same bus as Eleri though she is a 1st grader. As I was waiting, Helen’s grandma had just returned with new pants for a bargain, showing them off and wanting to take me to her new favorite shop. Helen’s grandma is a typical older Chinese who bikes all over the neighborhood to do the shopping and other errands. She asked if I had a bike – Yes, I have Jim’s bike that was left behind by Brad. The next thing I know I am following Helen’s grandma through the streets of Shanghai. I have no idea where we are going or how far.

Following Helen’s Grandma was in typical Chinese fashion weaving through the cars and people. Helen’s grandma is a fit 70 year old. She had on a pair of jeans with a sweater along with her little black pumps. It is common to see women dressed nicely peddling to work. We arrived at the little shop she purchased the pants. I picked out three pairs of pants for 130 rmb ($20). We then biked back through the crowds and streets of Shanghai to Yanlord. It was fun because she is so sweet and so happy she could take me to share in her bargain.
