Concordia has a charity of the month. This year Concordia’s theme is “Serve”. Emersyn charity of choice is Baobei. Baobei means “precious child”. Emersyn’s home room teacher, Mr. Stone, has an adopted Baobei daughter.

Baobei is an organization that provides surgeries for children with special needs. Baobei places many of these children into “Healing Homes” as they await adoption. Plastic water jugs are located throughout campus to collect “wu mao” (small change) to make a big difference in the lives of the small children who benefit from the program that provides life changing surgery for children with birth defects.

Emersyn wanted to sell cupcakes for the month as she did last year. She had a little cupcake business from her home room and at the lunch cafeteria. The first day she took cupcakes and cookies which she sold out in ONE day. I found myself baking cupcakes and making dinner in the evenings to keep up with demand. This year, Emersyn sold her cupcakes and cookies (3 to a bag) for 10rmb ($1.50). Last year, she sold her bake goods for 5rmb ($.80). She made double the money this year for a total of 2, 500rmb ($403). The hot selling cupcakes were the chocolate cupcakes with butter cream frosting – a new family favorite, also.
