We spend time in Nebraska with Grandma & Grandpa each summer. In Nebraska, the girls play with my cousins’ children. We do a weekly play date at the Scottsbluff pool. It has a big slide and it is really fun for the taller kids. Emmy had to wait until she was 8, last summer, […]

With the Concordia school schedule, the past couple of years, we have been flying home on my birthday. It is my birthday when I leave Shanghai and it is my birthday again when we land…a double celebration. Mimi held a very nice birthday dinner for me at her home upon our arrival. On the […]

Cupcakes were made again today for Emersyn’s class to celebrate her birthday. My chocolate cake with chocolate frosting recipe tastes best with Hershey’s cocoa. Since finding the Hershey cocoa in Shanghai is a challenge, I bring it back from the USA. After two cakes and two sets of cupcakes, my supply is low.

For Emersyn’s 9th birthday, we are celebrating in Hong Kong. We decided to make this a birthday destination when one of Emersyn’s Shanghai best friends, Mimi, moved to Hong Kong in February. Then, Emmy’s Hong Kong best buddy, Angus, was coming from Australia. He moved back home two years ago. With the […]

Concordia had a half-day of school today. Mary and I thought it would be a great day to take the girls (Emersyn and Eleri with Kelly and Erin) to the new Barbie Store. It is the global flagship store in Puxi…the only one of it’s kind. It is six floors of Barbie all in […]

You ask what is an “in-informance”. As was explained by Emersyn’s music teacher, Mr. Nurre, it was the concept of bringing the parents “into” the classroom to see what the kids were learning. In other words, the kids performed an “extemporaneous” recital in the gym (with a bit of chaos).

Recorders anyone?

Wearing school uniforms does have its own advantages – like no discussion on what to where on any given day. The schools come up with fun ways to dress “out of uniform”. Concordia, Emersyn’s school, does this more than Dulwich (it must be an American thing). Below are the fun dress days for the […]

Emersyn’s class had a school field trip today. We began the field trip at the World Financial Center (WFC). We watched the WFC grow from our apartment. It is currently the tallest building in Shanghai with 104 floors.

The Chinese love to pick the most interesting Western names. Women especially. There are many Barbies and Apples. But we know Elf and Amigo.

Amigo is Emersyn’s piano teacher. She is a delightful women who comes every Saturday to the house to teach lessons – yes, house call private lessons […]
