Finals are finished and the 8th grade class has three different off-campus field trips to learn more about Shanghai. Emersyn chose the photo assignment around Shanghai. For two days, she had fun taking photos around Shanghai. Here are some of them.

Emersyn and her friends, Bella and Hayden, joined the children’s community theater production of Cinderella. The theater production group was Shanghai LeRan Art Centre. The girls practiced every Saturday morning from 9-12 in Jinqiao for about four months. Finally, it was show time. Two shows were held at Dulwich school theater on May 31 and June 1 at 2:30pm. On Sunday, it was pouring rain!

Emersyn – Godmother
Bella – Cinderella
Hayden – stepsister, Calliope
Prince – Kilian Moirez, a French student

Lisa, Hayden’s Mom, and Meggan, Bella’s Mom, were backstage helping with makeup.

Emersyn’s birthday was on opening night of Cinderella. It didn’t seem like her birthday as she was out the door at 8am for the final practice and last minute preparations for opening night.

We did sing her happy birthday and took her photo with the birthday dog. Emersyn is 14 and Roxi is 3.

Emersyn was FABULOUS in the Cinderella. After the show, I arranged dinner with our gang of friends – the Jacobs, the Wangs, the DeJesus (Bella played Cinderella), the Dubniczkis (Hayden played a step sister) and the Yellands. I made cupcakes to take to dinner at Pistolera’s.

Linda asked for a candle for the cupcake in Chinese…this is what we they gave us for a candle for her cupcake!

We had a family celebration on Saturday night after the performance. Every birthday girl needs her own cake and candles…that fit on the cake!

Our tickets were 480 ($78) each with a handling fee of 40rmb ($6) and a delivery fee of 20rmb ($3) – that would be for the “nosebleed” section. The tickets sold out in 5 minutes on opening day. I was able to get 2 tickets later when “new” tickets were released.

The concert was held a the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Emersyn’s last Concordia Idol of her middle school career! She was going to sing a song with Bella, but Bella changed her mind and decided not to do Idol. Bella and Emersyn were too busy to get together to practice. On Sunday evening before the performance, Emersyn picked a song. She played it for me and my comment was it is a bit slow. Emersyn liked the song and the guitar was easy for her to play without practice. On Tuesday, Eleri generally has guitar lessons with Chester, but Emersyn took her lesson. Emersyn played the song for Chester and he said it was too slow! Wednesday night is Emersyn’s guitar lesson with Chester and they picked a new song. She practiced the song on Thursday, one day before Friday’s performance. The guitar was more difficult, but she learned the song quickly. When she practiced, she would have a few small errors. I told her to keep playing as no one is going to notice.

After school, the performers had a “run through” with a pizza dinner. Eleri and I found Emersyn after school to drop off the guitar and a change of clothes. Eleri was missing Idol tonight as she had a going away sleep over party.

This was the 9th year for Concordia Idol. Dr. B, the assistance principal, had a health concern that took him to Bangkok for some tests. Ms Poppell stepped in to bring Idol to the stage this year. With the last minute changes, there were no judges. It was a talent show for the kids to help build their confidence.

Emersyn sang, “King Of Anything” by Sara Bareilles.

On Wednesday, I pick Eleri up from school for fencing. After fencing, we pick Jim up from work on our way home. It makes for a late night for Eleri as she needs to shower, eat and do her homework. On this Wednesday, Jim wasn’t ready to leave work when we arrived at his office. These statues are outside the door of Jim’s building. So, Eleri used the time to take photos and have fun…being Eleri!

ES field day stated with Lulu spending the night on Wednesday night. Thursday was a Chinese Holiday with no school. Friday was field day. Field day has a theme of twin day – to dress up with a friend. Lulu and Eleri found matching Justice outfits of Eleri’s to wear for their twin day.

The girls wanted a color streak in their hair. After getting permission from Lulu’s Mom, we began the fun. I gave each girl one of Jim’s paint shirts. Eleri didn’t put her shirt on, she tied it up to make a fashion statement! I have natural dyes from America to give each girl two steaks. Lulu wanted blue and purple. Eleri wanted pink and purple.

DSC_4873

When we finished, Eleri’s pink streak was the brightest as she still has blonde from the summer. Lulu’s streaks did NOT show up at all. She was so disappointed! Her Mom took her to a professional salon to first bleach the streaks so the color would show. She had two bright pink streaks on Friday.

Eleri dressed and ready for field day.

Concordia has a charity of the month. This year Concordia’s theme is “Discover”. Emersyn charity of choice is Baobei. Baobei means “precious child”. Baobei is an organization that provides surgeries for children with special needs. Baobei places many of these children into “Healing Homes” as they await adoption. Plastic water jugs are located throughout campus to collect “wu mao” (small change) to make a big difference in the lives of the small children who benefit from the program that provides life changing surgery for children with birth defects.

Emersyn has baked for this charity for the past two years. This year, the month began with spring break and conferences. Then, Emersyn was off to Kuala Lumpur (KL) for Model United Nations (MUN). She was getting requests for her cupcakes from classmates as the month was slipping away. I baked a batch for her on Monday to take to school when she returned home from KL. The cupcakes were gone by Wednesday with students pre-ordering cupcakes. Wednesday was a full day at school for me with a parenting class, a field trip and fencing. The last thing I wanted to do a 8pm at night was make cupcakes, but I did (someday she will appreciate this). Thursday cupcakes were gone in 5 minutes. No cupcakes for Friday as Emersyn had too much homework and I had no time. The weekend we made a double batch of cupcakes…gone in less than 10 minutes on Monday. A single batch for Tuesday and a final double batch for Wednesday…whew, a lot of baking in the last two weeks! I am ready to put my mixer away until May 31!

DSC_4864_2

With her little cupcake business from the lunch cafeteria, Emersyn made a total of 2, 300rmb ($367) in two weeks. Last year for the month, she made 2, 500rmb ($403). Well, it appears I did a whole month of baking in two weeks.
