We moved our Tahoe adventure back a day due to the rain in the Bay Area. We decided to wait to see what kind of weather rolled in on Sunday. A clear morning…so we packed the cars for the drive to Tahoe. It was an easy drive with no traffic. The only slow traffic was before Donner pass due to chain laws of only 4-wheel drive or chains were enforced.

We arrived to beautiful snow covered Tahoe. We unpacked and shoveled the driveway before enjoying a nice stew dinner pre-made by Mimi. We built a fire to enjoy our smore treats after dinner.

On Monday, we had plans to meet our Shanghai friends, the Jenkins (Scott, Jennifer, Sean & Sophie), after lunch at Homewood. They were spending Christmas at Lake Tahoe. It was snowing so I figured I would get photos the next day – which was predicted to be beautiful. After one run on the bunny slope, we headed to the top. On the first run of the day, Emmy did a face dive in the powder. She was all twisted and came out crying. She said her knee was fine, but her leg hurt. She was unable to walk on it, so we called ski patrol. They took her down in the sled to the bottom. At the bottom, I saw Scott getting boots/skis as I was taking off my boots.

Jim and I drove Emmy to the medical care clinic in Tahoe City. We were able to get her first layers of clothes off, therefore, we only had to cut off her last layer of warmth. The x-ray confirmed she broke her leg. Well, I didn’t think you could break a leg in a ski boot, but I was wrong. The x-ray also told us she had a bone cyst which is why her leg broke so easy. It also explains why she has been hurting her ankle so much playing soccer. The cyst was just above her growth plate. The doctor put her in a full leg splint (no photo). We took her back to the house to rest.

Jim went back to Homewood resort to check on Elle we left skiing with Terri and Andy. Elle was having fun skiing. Jim met up with the Jenkins to take Sean to the top of Homewood. He left Elle in the care of Scott and Jennifer. I was told, Scott was trying to get Elle up the bunny lift which is a pull lift. Jennifer said she was crying watching them as they would get just a short ways and both would fall off laughing. Terri and Andy came skiing over the hill wondering who this strange man was with Elle and where was Jim? Elle had a fun day skiing. She was a much stronger skiing than the last time we took her two years ago at the age of 4.

We left Tahoe the next day to get back to the Bay Area as we need to get Emmy to the doctor to follow up on the cyst and the broken leg. We were able to get a 5pm office appointment. It was a beautiful day in Tahoe – the sun was shining along with all the fresh snow. It would have been a great ski day. We really weren’t too bummed about the great ski day. We were all disappointed we were not going to spend the day skiing with the Jenkins. There will always be more beautiful ski days – just not ski days with the Jenkins. So, no photos from our Tahoe adventure!

The doctor put Emersyn in a cast for one month. Emersyn chose the color green. She will need to wear the boot for two months once the cast is off. We purchased the boot in California to save us the time of having to search Shanghai to find the boot. The doctor wants a x-ray when the cast comes off and a month later to see how the cyst is reacting to the break. The break may force the cyst to heal. If not, we will do surgery this summer back in America.

Uncle Andy drew Emmy skiing on her cast. Who would of thought an engineer could draw so well!

Each year the girls decorate gingerbread houses with Aunt Nancy. Gingerbread making with Nancy is a one of their favorite Christmas traditions. This year, the only weekend to make houses was Saturday, December 18. We had planned to drive to Tahoe on Friday, but moved it back a day as both girls did NOT want to miss the fun with Aunt Nancy. The new plan was to drive to Tahoe after gingerbread fun with Nancy.

Nancy makes the houses from scratch and puts out all kinds of candy. My favorite candy is the hot-tomales. I eat them all so not many of them show up on the houses!

Getting Started

Our little raindeer

Eating & decorating

When the girls finished their gingerbread houses, I like to get the a photo with their completed masterpieces. We use the gingerbread houses as center pieces for Christmas entertainment at our house.

It was a damp, raining day in California. Just as we finished taking the photos of their masterpieces, Emmy’s house began to sink. The roof started to slide along with the walls. The team did their best to save the house. Newspaper went in the middle for reinforcements. Toothpicks to hold the roof up and a final warm in the oven to take the moisture out of the walls.

Emersyn was fine with her “fixer-upper” looking house. It is all about the fun with Aunt Nancy.

Tree decorating is very important to the girls. This year, we were squeezing the tree decorating in on Friday night. We arrived on Thursday with the Nutcracker performance in the evening. Friday morning was a run to the mall to see Santa (to get Mom’s photos with Santa). Friday night was the only night to decorate the tree before headed up to Tahoe tomorrow. The only problem was our house was full of people after entertaining a dozen family members for dinner. The girls weren’t to thrilled that Mom and Dad were busy as they did most of the decorating on their own. Next year, we will have to schedule the tree decorating time with more care. They did a beautiful job on the family tree.

Every year Terri and Andy take the girls to the San Francisco Nutcracker. Terri began the tradition when Emersyn was three. They treat the girls to a nice dinner in the City, the show and a Nutcracker. Each year, Terri and Andy buy the girls a Nutcracker to add to their collections.

It began to snow while we were at school today. It is cold in Shanghai in the winter, but snow is not common. It made for a beautiful winter white land.

Emersyn’s class Christmas party was Wednesday from 1:30 – 3:30. The party was arranged for the 5th grade students. As the class Mom, it was an easy party. We started with a craft in the room the teachers had organized. The children put molding clay around a photo for a Christmas tree ornament.

Next, there were games in the middle school gym. One of the games was “decorate the teacher”.

The decorated 5th Grade Teachers

After the games, the children enjoyed an ice cream bar in the Phoenix Commons. We had chocolate sauce, m&m’s, oreos and whip cream for toppings. It was a fun party for the children.

It began snowing during the party. After school, the girls enjoyed playing in the snow with their friends.

Eleri’s class Christmas party is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday. She will miss it as we will be on a plane to California.

Another year has passed as we get ready for the Christmas Holiday. The girls always have a short list of “wants” from Santa. The advantage of no tv is no commercials. The have no idea about the latest, greatest toy – Love it!!

Emersyn had said she wanted a sewing machine and Eleri wanted an ipod for her music. Since we are going to California, we have a chance to buy their “wants” when we get home. Then, Eleri came home with her wish list to Santa.

It reads:

Der Santa
I want a rodat dog
I want a ipod
I want a rodat
I want batleship
I want a Chrismas Tre
I want a kande kang
I want a hat
from Eleri

The robot dog has been something she has wanted for years, but what is available on the market is not what she wants. The robot dog she got three years ago for Christmas is still on the market. That robot dog went back due to poor performances. Eleri informed us Santa brought her the wrong dog because it doesn’t do anything right. She took it back and got her stuffed dog, No Name.

But, battleship is a good classic game – that one should be easy. I went to Amazon. com to buy the game so it would be at the house when we arrived. I was thinking the game should cost around $19.95. Oh no – not that easy – enters the fun of the Battleship board game. It appears there is a new version with a common game piece shared in the middle of the table. ALL the reviews were BAD – not one person liked the new Battleship game! But, you can buy a used 1968 or 1971 or 2002 version from $65 – $150 based on the game’s condition. We moved over to ebay to see what was offered. We found a 1968 game for $36 plus shipping for a total of $58. Now, Eleri will get a slight used game from Santa! So, if you have your battleship game from when you were a kid, don’t toss it or give it away!

The SEA (Shanghai Expat Association) Christmas lunch Party is a big event. Eleri and I went last year with Jennifer and Sophie. This year, I renewed my membership because Eleri had so much fun. This was Emersyn’s first time for SEA Christmas party. We arranged seating to be with the Jenkins (Jennifer, Sean & Sophie) and the Bishops (Faith, Dan, Avery & Riley) at the party.

Dress and ready for the fun

This is a kid’s party, therefore, the food is all kid-friendly with chicken nuggets, french fries and small sandwiches. The parents do get champagne, but leave the party a bit hungry.

There are all kinds of crafts for the kids from bead making to puppet making. Both, the girls had so much fun making puppets, necklaces and Christmas ornaments. In addition, each child gets a bag of goodies from Santa. In all, it is a fun afternoon for the kids.

Elle, Riley & Sophie enjoying the fun

Each child gets a gingerbread house kit. Of course, Elle wanted to make her house at the party. I convinced her to wait until we got home. Last year, I dropped the house just as we were getting out of the taxi. My final card to get her to wait was all the other children were waiting until they got home. When we left the party, it was pouring rain. I was thrilled we hadn’t made the gingerbread house. Luckily, Jennifer’s driver drove us as the queue for a taxi was long this Sunday afternoon.

We began making the houses as soon as we got home.

The Middle & High School Band Concert was held on Thursday, December 9 in the Rittmann Center at 7pm. The concert began with the High School Band followed by the 5th Grade band, 6th Grade Band, 7th & 8th Grade Band and ending with the High School Jazz Band.

The 5th grade band played two songs: Chopsticks for Christmas & Christmas Elves in Santa’s Workshop.

Emersyn was nervous about playing the songs. The 5th Grade Band did amazingly well. For a group of children that have been playing together for about two months, they played together brilliantly. I don’t even think we heard a single squeak from the band.

One quick stop at the Phoenix Center Commons Christmas tree for a photo. Emmy dress attire required a white shirt, black skirt & black shoes. I had the shirt made at the fabric market for 100rmb ($15). The skirt was made for 100rmb by the school talior. It was very easy as the tailored came to school to measure the kids. The shoes, well, not so easy. On Saturday, I took Emmy to the kids market looking for black shoes or boots. She found a pair of boots for 380rmb ($57) and the women would not bargain. Since Emerysn is a tennis shoe girl and not a boot girl, I wasn’t willing to pay $60 for something she would wear once. On to Plan B as time was not on our side. My friend, Faith, has a very small foot with a size 6.5. I borrowed a pair of Faith’s shoes and told her to walk carefully across the stage so she wouldn’t trip. They were slightly big, but perfect when you are desperate!!
